Research Technician - O'Shea Lab

Summary:

We offer an opportunity to join the dynamic research environment of the HHMI Janelia Research Campus as a full-time research technician in the Erin O'Shea lab. The person hired for this position will provide standard services in cell culture and other miscellaneous tasks. The laboratory has a strong interest in understanding the complexity of neuron-glia interactions in health and neurological diseases. This position will provide an opportunity to work with several types of glial cells (astrocytes, microglia) and neurons, and participate in the discovery of essentials roles of glia in the context of Parkinson's disease.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Cell Culture
    • Maintenance, feeding, passaging, counting, and cryopreservation of iPSCs and other sensitive cell lines
    • Preparation of cell culture reagents
      • Media and buffers
      • Extracellular matrix coating of plates/dishes/slides
      • Stocks of differentiation-related proteins
  • Euthanasia and brain extraction of neonatal mice
  • qPCR
  • Immunofluorescence
  • Flow cytometry and FACS
  • Transfection
  • Cloning
  • Western blots
  • CRISPR and accompanying techniques
  • In addition to the duties specifically identified by this job description, the position will include other duties if and as assigned by the direct supervisor or others with supervisory authority over this position


Scope:
  • Performs assigned research tasks ranging from routine to complex procedures
  • May be asked to develop new technologies or adopt protocols from other labs
  • works independently and manages multiple aspects of research projects
  • processes large sample sets and maintains organized records


Qualifications:
  • B.S. is in any science related field
  • Special consideration will be given to those individuals who are interested in further pursuing an education in science


Experience:
  • Ideally 1-2 years of experience in a bioscience lab out of college or recent graduate with undergrad research experience in cell culture
  • Must have experience in sterile cell culture techniques


Skills and Abilities:
  • Candidate should be familiar with MS Office tools such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Attention to detail and maintaining accurate lab notebook
  • Ability to balance multiple requests and assignments
  • A customer service mindset that includes strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team effort and as an individual contributor
  • A willingness to learn new techniques and procedures


Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
