Research Scientist/Specialist

Research Scientist/Specialist

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a science philanthropy whose mission is to advance biomedical research and science education for the benefit of humanity. We empower exceptional scientists and students to pursue fundamental questions about living systems, and work to share scientific discoveries with researchers, students, and science-curious individuals around the world. Founded in 1953 by aviator and industrialist Howard R. Hughes, HHMI is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and employs more than 2,500 people across the U.S. HHMI offers competitive salaries and excellent benefits including generous paid time off and a 403(b) employer contributed retirement plan with immediate vesting.

An exciting opportunity exists for a Research Scientist/Research Specialist to join a dynamic team of researchers in the laboratory of Darrell Irvine at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA.

Engineering approaches grounded in immunology hold the key to the discovery and development of novel treatments for cancer, infectious disease, and autoimmunity. To this end, the overarching goal of the Irvine laboratory is to engineer immunity through a fusion of immunology with biotechnology and materials chemistry, employing a materials science-centric approach to create new therapies based on the controlled modulation of the immune system. The lab's work toward this goal divides into three complementary themes, all focused on adapting engineering principles to enhance the ability of the immune system to prevent and treat human disease.
