Postdoctoral Associate - Walther/Farese Lab - Neuroscience

    • Boston, MA

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is an independent, ever-evolving philanthropy that supports basic biomedical scientists and educators with the potential for transformative impact. We make long-term investments in people, not just projects, because we believe in the power of individuals to make breakthroughs over time. HHMI scientists have radically advanced the understanding of cells, the brain, the immune system, the development of organs, and how to treat many diseases. Founded in 1953 by aviator and industrialist Howard R. Hughes, HHMI is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and employs more than 2,500 people across the U.S.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to work within the shared labs of HHMI Investigator Dr. Tobias Walther and his collaborator Dr. Robert Farese. The Farese and Walther Laboratory studies the molecular pathways of neurodegeneration, especially as pertaining to brain lipid homeostasis. Ultimately, the lab hopes to uncover the biochemical and physical principles that govern lipid balance and storage and to determine how alterations in lipid stores affect physiology and disease.

We are seeking outstanding candidates with Ph.D. training in cellular and murine models of neurodegeneration. Projects are available in the areas of lysosome biology and frontotemporal dementia and in the area of altered sphingolipid homeostasis and neurodegenerative diseases.

More information can be found on the lab's website:

General Qualifications:

  • Ph.D and/or M.D./Ph.D. degree in cell biology or neurodegenerative disease research
  • Effective communication skills, self-motivated, and a strong work ethic
  • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative group environment
  • Strong publication record is highly preferred

Applicants should submit both their curriculum vitae, a detailed statement on how their experience and interests relate to our work, and the names/phone numbers of three people who could provide letters of reference.
