Janelia Research Campus is a pioneering research center in Ashburn, Virginia, where scientists pursue fundamental questions in neuroscience and imaging. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) launched Janelia in 2006, establishing an intellectually distinctive environment for scientists to do creative, collaborative, hands-on work. Our integrated teams of biologists, computational scientists, and tool-builders pursue a small number of scientific questions with potential for transformative impact. We share our methods, results, and tools with the scientific community. It is a uniquely innovative and collaborative atmosphere that reflects HHMI's reputation for excellence.
Summary: Mediation of cell-cell interactions by extracellular biomolecules has been an under-addressed target of chemical biology, yet presents unique protein engineering challenges. We are looking for a Ph.D.-level scientist to join us in developing protein-based tools for use in challenging and heterogenous environments. Our lab takes a chemical biology approach, leveraging small-molecules, protein engineering, and directed evolution to create tools for biology. Examples of projects include the of manipulation and detection of cell-cell and cell-matrix contacts, manipulation of enzyme activity, multiplexed labeling strategies, and development of affinity reagents. Our work is interdisciplinary and highly collaborative: we work with labs at Janelia and elsewhere to apply our technologies to important questions in biology.
