Summary:

This position provides senior-level technical and managerial guidance and support for the Business Solutions team supporting the Investment Department. The Investment Department manages a $21 billion endowment fund supporting HHMI's mission. The endowment comprises a diverse portfolio, including investments in domestic and international hedge funds, private equity funds, venture capital funds, real assets and direct co-investments, as well as publicly-traded domestic and foreign stocks, government securities and other strategies spanning multiple asset classes.

The Manager of Investment System Capabilities provides leadership to a team of technical professionals who are responsible for the systems, processes and tools used by the Investments Department. This includes being aware of industry solutions and selecting products and services appropriate to the Institute while managing projects from requirements through implementation and working with other technology teams to provide support. This position requires considerable exercise of initiative and independent judgment in managing multiple priorities and coordinating work activities to meet established schedules and goals. Responsibilities include determining the Investment system application architecture and roadmap in areas including financial (Eagle Investment Systems) management, customer relationship (Dynamo) management, and document (iManage Work) management as well as business intelligence/analytics (Tableau) and the Investment Intranet (Interaction). This includes business analysis and requirements gathering; update and release management; testing; application security; customer support and training. The incumbent will work with Program and Portfolio Management, Product Owners and other business teams as well as service providers to coordinate design, development, testing and implementation activities and will ensure adherence to agile application methodology best practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Staff Management
    • Manage and advise Investment System Capabilities team, ensure high expectations are met, resolve technical development issues, and encourage professional development and growth.
    • Manage the team workload, assign tasks, and ensure deliverables are documented and completed on time.
    • Measure team performance and identify opportunities for improvement for the team or specific individuals.
  • Application Development
    • Lead the application architecture and roadmap to provide reliable, stable and effective Investment solutions.
    • Serve as the most senior architect, providing technical leadership, skills and experience to all projects in the group.
  • Technical Oversight
    • Oversee the planning and management of application design, build and unit test activities.
    • Work in partnership with Business Solution colleagues, IT Services and/or teams in other functions to plan and deliver complex solutions.
    • Provide strategic and operational guidance to application maintenance, data flows and general support activities.
    • Ensure adherence to agile application methodology best practices/standards.
    • Identify and effectively manage interdependencies between various application solution and implementation activities.
  • Manage Deliverables
    • Prioritize activities in conjunction with Product Owner team
    • Work with the Product and Portfolio Management team to:
      • Work closely with internal customers, Product Owner sponsors, IT Services and Business Solution teams to maintain excellent working relationships.
      • Provide technical expertise to business customers and colleagues during requirements gathering, solution evaluation/selection, and system implementation.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree required, degree in Computer or Information Science preferred


Experience:
  • Ten+ years of experience leading the planning, purchase (or build) and deployment of business application solutions
  • Three to five years of experience in management and support of investment system or accounting solutions; experience with Eagle Investment System solution a plus
  • Three years of experience leading solution architecture and planning
  • Experience with data management and data analytic solutions that drive investment insight and intelligence
  • Expert understanding of software architecture and design patterns
  • Knowledge of systems management principles - quality control, security, reporting, teamwork
  • Strong experience in application performance and monitoring procedures and tools
  • Proven experience of leading and implementing processes for agile-based development processes
  • Experience with Dev/Ops principles and practices
