Laboratory Manager - Littman Lab

    • New York, NY

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is an independent, ever-evolving philanthropy that supports basic biomedical scientists and educators with the potential for transformative impact. We make long-term investments in people, not just projects, because we believe in the power of individuals to make breakthroughs over time. HHMI scientists have radically advanced the understanding of cells, the brain, the immune system, the development of organs, and how to treat many diseases. Founded in 1953 by aviator and industrialist Howard R. Hughes, HHMI is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and employs more than 2,500 people across the U.S.

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Lab Manager to join the lab of Dr. Dan Littman at New York University Medical Center. The Littman lab investigates how T lymphocytes acquire functional properties during development and in response to extrinsic stimuli. These studies are aimed at better understanding how alterations in the intestinal microbiota influence systemic inflammatory processes, such as T cell-mediated autoimmune diseases, and responses to cancer immunotherapy and to infection with HIV and other pathogenic microbes. More information on the lab can be found on their website:

We're looking for someone who will serve as the lynchpin for the day-to-day operations of the lab, in addition to supporting the diverse research projects - and possibly even running their own! We expect this person to serve as a liaison between the lab members, HHMI, and NYU departments and to help navigate the many complexities of running a research lab.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Manage the budget and spending oversight for the lab - including placing orders for materials and supplies, negotiating with vendors, and cost analysis of research projects
  • Administer lab safety programs and train and monitor laboratory members as needed to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations
    • Manage yearly regulatory review process with various governing bodies to ensure compliance
  • Oversight of essential equipment and maintenance
  • Oversee the mouse genotyping, breeding, and embryo/sperm freezing program for the laboratory to ensure efficient and cost-effective management of large mouse genetic program
  • Supervise management of the laboratory plasmid and cell line inventories
  • Train students and technicians in a variety of laboratory procedures
  • Supervise technicians and assist with time management among lab members to maintain organization and smooth running of the lab
  • Assign shared responsibilities to lab members

Preferred Qualifications:
  • B.A. or B.S. in Biological or Natural Sciences
    • M.S. or Ph.D. preferred
  • Minimum 5 years related laboratory research, technician or laboratory management experience
    • Extensive experience in Molecular Biology (e.g. RNAseq, molecular cloning, library construction, PCR, recombinant protein expression and purification) and mammalian cell culture (transfections, retroviral transductions, reporter assays) or mouse genetics (mouse breeding, genotyping, phenotyping by immunohistochemistry and FACS screening)
  • Candidate must be self-motivated, energetic and able to work in a diverse laboratory environment
  • Excellent organizational, communication, computer and record-keeping skills
  • Experience with management of large and diverse mouse colonies is especially desired
