Electrical Engineering Manager
Summary: The jET Electrical Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and supervising a team of engineers as they design, develop, and implement a variety of simple to complex instruments and prototype systems supporting advancement of research at the Janelia campus. The focus of work in the EE group is instrument design grounded in analog electronics, control systems, embedded systems (Arduino, FPGA, etc), motor and servo systems, and robotics. The Electrical Engineering Manager will plan, execute, and lead all levels of projects and can architect systems to solve most technical challenges on budget and within time. The Engineering Manager will perform individual tasks and project level engineering activities, and will have an expert level of familiarity with the concepts, practices, and procedures in electrical engineering. The Engineering Manager will also work collaboratively with research customers and department colleagues, including mentoring junior engineers and providing technical leadership and advice to others as needed. Successful performance in this role requires broad and deep technical and systems knowledge in addition to solid collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Study the project concepts, objectives, priorities, and requirements as well as analyze user and potential user input to identify and establish performance requirements and test methods for developed systems. Translate the requirements into engineering concepts, designs and plans in collaboration with clients, team members, and jET director.
- Design, develop, assemble, integrate, test, and optimize simple to complex systems, instruments, and one-of-a-kind prototypes for neurobiological and other biomedical research. Applications will include development of systems, sub-assemblies and component parts.
- Estimate upfront costs, and then track time, effort, supplies, and materials costs to enable proper charges to customers.
- Review existing and/or create new detailed drawings, bill of materials, and other documentation such as schematics etc. to ensure accurate technical records are produced.
- Work collaboratively with internal research customers and a multi-disciplinary team.
- Stay abreast of technical innovations in the engineering and design field that could be of benefit to research customers and help to develop related capabilities in the group as needed.
- Collaborate in the development of robust systems that can be distributed and replicated at multiple sites. Solid documentation management skills are required.
- Provide shared resource support to the campus as a whole.
- Mentor and provide direction to junior engineers as needed.
- Recommend and pursue outsourcing as needed.
- Execute designs in a ECAD environment perform design analysis, create drawings and perform revision control of design documents.
- Other duties, as assigned.
- This position has project budget responsibilities.
- Direct supervision of other employees and may also supervise outside contractors related to equipment fabrication, installation, and repair.
- Occasional weekend or off hours work required.
- Utilizes internal resources and outside contractors to achieve project and department goals.
- Occasional travel required.
- M.S. Electrical / Biomedical Engineering /Control systems or the equivalent work related experience required, MS preferred.
Education / Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience developing electrical or control systems; more preferred.
- Demonstrated experience executing on multiple complicated projects, where significant contributions were made towards common project goals.
- Experience with design and implementation of instrumentation and/or automation.
- Familiarity with R&D instrument development for life science research preferred.
- 3 years in management role or relevant work experience.
Skills and Abilities:
- Expert level technical aptitude in Electrical engineering and control system theory, principles, and practice.
- Expert level technical aptitude in motor and servo control and sensor theory, principles, and practice
- High level project management skills in all phases of project planning and execution.
- Ability to translate varied and potentially ambiguous customer requests, which will be of a scientific as well as technical nature, into project requirements. Ability to translate project requirements into one or more design options.
- Ability to describe and explain design concepts, theory of operation, usage and instructions for developed designs.
- Expert level ability to create designs using ECAD design design software packages such as Eagle , Altium, or equivalent.
- Expertise with tools, instruments, and equipment relevant to engineering discipline.
- Ability to lead the technical aspect of assigned projects by utilizing engineering domain knowledge and understanding.
- Ability to generate detailed design schematics, drawings, bill of materials, and other documentation required to fabricate and reproduce designs.
- Knowledge, understanding of, and design skills relevant to fabrication techniques required for engineering discipline.
- Ability to prioritize and work on projects for more than one research group concurrently, each with multiple project tasks.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in both a verbal and written manner.
- Knowledge and experience in high powered analog electronics
- Knowledge and experience in PCB design for high speed data acquisition and storage and low latency control of hardware and real-time control systems.
- Knowledge and experience in microcontroller programming (Arduino etc.) and FPGA programming
- Knowledge and experience in design and implementation of robotics systems and motor, servo, and sensor control.
- Experience with engineering document revision control.
- Knowledge and experience in using analytical tools to model complex circuits.
- Experience with electrical fabrication techniques for manufacture of PCB's, cables, breadboarding and prototyping of circuitry. Be able to determine when best to design custom hardware and when off the shelf components can be utilized.
- Ability to rapidly prototype systems
- Familiarity with scientific computing software (e.g. MATLAB).
- Regularly lifts and/or carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Regularly stoops and bends.
- Regularly reaches and grasps with arms and hands.
- Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
- Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
