Market Research Analyst - Consumer Trends

HomeAway is looking for a “data storyteller” to provide timely business, cultural, societal and industry insights to the global marketing team. This new position could be considered a “hybrid” position to unlock the potential of using data to further tell and validate the HomeAway story in the marketplace. This position will be on the Global PR Team based in Austin, Texas.

The ideal candidate is excellent at deep research, equal parts data analyst and newshound. We need someone who can spot trends and interesting news hooks buried in HomeAway data and research. At the same time, this person will use a wide variety of tools to uncover trends in our industry, culture and society globally, identify anomalies and glean insights. The PR team and others in the overall marketing function will take this information and tie it back to our business in a relevant way to help tell the HomeAway story and brand promise.


-Serve as eyes and ears of the marketing organization, relaying actionable insights regardless of the source

-Have finger on the pulse of the overall travel industry, HomeAway's business and the news/media landscape

-Support the marketing and public relations teams by providing timely facts, figures and insights on both an ad hoc and campaign basis

-Interpret research data and uncover insights that create a compelling ‘story’ that meets HomeAway’s business and communications objectives

-Explore what motivates perceptions, companies and policy issues across the travel industry and others.

-Present insights in a way that members at all levels of the marketing organization can understand and use to tell the HomeAway story

-Pull reports and conduct analysis of HomeAway data, collaborating with the HomeAway business intelligence team as needed

-Work with HomeAway's market research team to conduct surveys and analyze results

-Help teams set, measure and report KPIs

-Oversee media coverage tracking and reporting to pinpoint insights, information and trends and inform leadership in general


-5+ years of relevant experience with a variety of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and the ability to apply the appropriate methodology to the research need

-Excellent reading comprehension and writing skills, analytical skills, computer skills, data searching skills and basic knowledge of essential software listed below. 

-Knowledge of operational components of market research, such as questionnaire development and program checking, sample management and data cleaning

-Experience managing agencies and vendors; particularly research firms and media monitoring services

-Familiarity with social media and experience with mining relevant data from social platforms

-LexisNexis and other research libraries 

-Excel (excellent proficiency) and MS Office Suite

-Tableau Desktop and other data visualization tools

-Google suite of tools

-Highly adaptable, with the ability to quickly respond to last-minute requests 

-Able to work independently and proactively

-Strong communication and presentation skills

-Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study, preferably library and information science, journalism or market research

Familiarity with the following is helpful, but not required:

-Proficient in mathematics, statistics, computer science or other quantitative discipline

-Principles of A-B testing methodologies and analyses

-SQL (relational tables, multiple joins, etc.)

-Datameer, R Studio, SalesForce
