Job Description:

Hewlett Packard Enterprise is seeking an on-site system administrator to support a complex HPC and storage solution delivering supercomputing resources to scientists and researchers at a premier Department of Defense center in the Aberdeen, MD area. The HPCMP provides the DoD supercomputing capabilities, high-speed network communications and computation science expertise that enable DoD scientists and engineers to conduct a wide-range of focused research, development and test activities. This partnership puts advanced technology in the hands of the U.S. Armed Forces more quickly, less expensively, and with greater certainty of success.

  • Significant experience with system administration in a large Linux cluster environment.
  • Experience with configuration, troubleshooting and maintenance of Lustre filesystems.
  • Expertise with hardware and software on High Performance Computing Systems.
  • Knowledge of system interoperability with Raid [or other] Storage, Networks (Ethernet and Infiniband), Servers, and other system type attachments.
  • High level of problem isolation and identification skills.
  • Appropriate management of system resources through the use of batch scheduler software.
  • Assist in hardware failure determination and resolution by running system diagnostics to isolate failing or failed hardware components.
  • Experience working with clients to identify and understand requirements driven by both technical and work flow constraints.
  • Assist users in achieving best performance usage on SGI hardware.
  • Maintain and develop scripts for users and 3rd party software applications.
  • Monitoring of system performance and recommending system tuning ideas such as upgrading compilers, OS, changing system parameters, resource restrictions, etc.
  • Recommend techniques and policies for effective use of machine resources in a large multiuser environment.
  • Develop documentation and team training as requested.
  • Assist with allocation of system resources and operating system tuning and configuration.
  • Knowledge of some or all of the following: FORTRAN, C and C++, OpenMP, MPI, parallel programming.
  • Performs system installation/setup, upgrades, configuration changes, and field change orders.
  • Utilizes system tools, diagnostics, online databases, and technical documentation to expedite repair efforts.
  • Perform error log monitoring, analysis, and resolution.
  • Follows escalation guidelines to minimize customer impacts.
  • Provide periodic written and/or oral progress reports.
  • Expected to work after hours and weekends when necessary.
  • Team with sales by keeping them informed of account activity/escalations, assisting in equipment proposals and account planning sessions as appropriate.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Experience with Linux system administration
  • Experience working with and maintaining of a Linux cluster environment and software stack.
  • High level of problem isolation and identification skills.
  • Completes onsite problem identification and resolution through both hands-on hardware repair and software skills.
  • Maintaining, developing, and debugging scripts for users and 3rd party software applications (e.g. bash, python, perl).
  • Performing system installation/setup, upgrades, configuration changes, patch management and field change orders.
  • Install and test any licensed software updates, releases, and patches provided by SGI and third parties.
  • Monitoring of system performance and recommending system tuning ideas such as upgrading compilers, OS, changing system parameters, etc.
  • Monitor the performance and availability of designated systems, proactively and reactively address problems, specifically to maintain the agreed SLA.
  • Ability to manage, facilitate and coordinate resources to prioritize timely resolution of system and customer concerns.
  • CompTIA Security+ & CompTIA Linux+ certifications or able to obtain within first 2 months of employment.
  • Current TS clearance required.

  • Moderate level of vertical industry knowledge in one of the key industry IT domains.
  • Moderate vertical solution expertise
  • Moderate customer knowledge.
  • Familiarity with project management methodologies
  • Moderate level of consultative approach, solution selling and business development skills.
