Hewlett Packard Labs - Postdoctoral Researcher

Hewlett Packard Labs - Postdoctoral Researcher

Job Description:

The Systems Architecture Lab (SAL) within Hewlett Packard Labs has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher with a PhD in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, applied physics or related areas. Candidates with expertise in analog/digital circuit simulation or architectural design, particularly involving hybrid CMOS/advanced devices, or regular expression matching and finite state machines are encouraged to apply. Experience with machine learning, network security, combinatorial optimization, and signal processing is highly desirable as well.

The SAL team is engaged in programs to develop advanced computational accelerators having applications in neuromorphic computing, network security, combinatorial optimization, and signal processing. In particular, the Postdoctoral Researcher will work on a project to create finite automata in hardware which accelerate regular expression (RegEx) matching. RegEx are found in common rules employed by Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS), but state-of-the-art matching implementations are heavily limited by the size and performance of FPGAs and memories. This project uses hybrid digital/analog structures to implement a high performance TCAM (ternary content addressable memory) and exploits the co-location of memory and computation. High energy efficiency and increased speeds are achieved by the use of memristors and their favorable analog and scaling properties.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will work in a team environment to contribute to the efforts to design, program, simulate, operate, and benchmark a hybrid CMOS/memristor circuit for implementing finite automata for NIDS. The Postdoctoral Researcher will also be able to participate in a team environment to simulate, operate, test, and design novel modes of computation using a developed hardware platform of memristor crossbar arrays and custom control electronics.
