Architectural Designer

Job Responsibilities:
  With preliminary direction from a licensed architect, assist in urban design, predesign and all design phases of multistory mixed-use, housing, high-rise residential, resort design and large-scale corporate/commercial, hotel, retail, educational, museum, hospitality and religious projects, including new construction, renovation (with existing structure), tenant improvement, parking garage, and unit plans; conduct university campus/village research, setting up strategic guidelines for appropriate approaches and statistical data visualization; meet with client representatives for presentations and workshops, analysis of goals and needs, develop programmed space spreadsheets, narrative summaries, room data sheets, adjacency diagrams, graphic content, and prepare final developed project program documents; research domestic and international building codes and regulations, collect data, and write reports and presentations to incorporate research and data into architectural designs; develop site analysis studies requiring site photography, code research, base drawings, and diagrams in transportation, urban context analysis; develop site design alternative studies requiring site plans, site sections, site elevation studies, 3D digital massing and physical site modeling; develop concept alternatives, studies and development requiring 3D digital massing with required software, including Sketch up, Revit, Rhino, as well as floor plans, space plans, building elevations, sections and perspectives with integration into building Information modeling (BIM) approaches; develop exterior envelope design including metal paneling, curtain wall system, rain screen and EIFS system requiring enlarged plans, elevations, sections, details and axonometric drawings; research material and product and prepare for appropriate finish schedules or appliances schedules for exteriors and interiors; organize BIM for all documents coordinate BIM modeling  via Revizto, and generate weekly report to keep track of issues; prepare client and public presentations, workshops and meetings using 2D/3D CAD and BIM programs, including Revit, Vassari, AutoCAD, Rhino, Grasshopper plugins, Maxwell, and SketchUp, analysis and computer skills to develop 3D building computer models and images and presentation images; develop documents for conceptual design phases, schematic design through construction documents including documenting architectural plans, elevations, and details in imperial or metric standards for jurisdictional agency corrections using 2D/3D modeling including Autodesk AutoCAD 2012 or higher, Rhinoceros 4.0 or higher, Grasshopper, Autodesk Revit 2015 and related BIM, 2D and 3D Modeling software; translate clients' functional and spatial requirements for structures into feasible design solutions, incorporating custom roof/door/window/curtain wall/water proofing detailing, structural engineering seismic/structural feasibility principles and building systems (From steel to wood structure, Type 1 through Type 5 building) into architectural designs; produce design documentation and presentations using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, PowerPoint, Prezi and free-hand sketching; coordinate conceptual design drawings with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection (MEP/FP), civil, structural, lighting, A/V, telecom, graphics, interiors and landscape consultants to incorporate building systems into architectural designs to produce construction documentation and secure client and regulatory approval; assist in the implementation of firm-wide strategies and collaborate with design teams to ensure sustainable design success, provide support and guidance firm-wide, and focus on the seamless rollout of sustainable design implementation in office design projects including urban design, transportation, retail, and international multistory and high-rise buildings; prepare and incorporate weather data analysis to identify passive design potential based on the local climate and building use to minimize building energy needs and maximize the energy savings; prepare building energy models using energy simulation software including DesignBuilder, IES VE-Pro, eQuest, EnergyPro, BEOpt, Ecotect, HEED & Vasari to evaluate heating loads, cooling loads and the building’s overall energy performance; prepare daylight simulation in AG132, 3D Design Studio, Dayism/Radiance & Ecotect to evaluate the annual daylight availability and glare risk; provide ongoing development and support for all sustainable design platforms and work closely with design and delivery leadership to guide the transition from traditional sustainable design process and standalone environmental analysis practices into integrated design and analysis processes in collaborative work environments; set up automated parametric optimization workflows using available and custom developed scripts including Grasshopper for Rhino/Ecotect assimilation to connect 3D modeling tools, building environmental analysis tools and evolutionary optimization algorithms to optimize the building orientation, shape and/or building envelope and provide quick feedback on the performance (energy efficiency) to rest of the design team; make corrections as indicated by Project Architect and Design Director to in-progress sets of design development and construction documents; process general contractor’s requests for information (RFI’s), submittals, and change order requests; conduct site visits, field observation and meetings to review the progress of construction and verify designs; organize, file and distribute documents utilizing eBuilder and Newforma software; respond to Requests for Qualifications (RFQ’s), Requests for Proposals (RFP’s) and design competitions.
Job Qualifications:


Bachelor of Architecture (5 year) or foreign equivalent plus 2 years of experience to include participating in all phases of medium-large scale multistory mixed-use, housing, corporate/commercial, retail, entertainment, hospitality, resort and religious projects, including urban design, University campus development/expansion research, new construction, renovation (with reserving existing structure), tenant improvement, parking garage, parametric design/fabrication, unit plans, site analysis in feasibility study, transportation, urban context analysis, and 2d visualization of program diagramming with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop; applying design regulations, international building code and design standards to international and domestic projects; linking design and energy simulation tools using Rhino, Grasshopper3D, Revit & Vasari, Autodesk Ecotect to perform energy simulation at early design stage to inform architecture of the project; developing design using parametric tools, including Grasshopper, Ecotect, Paneling tool; developing building information modeling (BIM) process workflow for medium-large scale projects though all project phases using Revit/ArchiCAD, integrating architectural/Structural/Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing models together; coordinating and producing 3d models and 2d technical drawings in all architectural phases; 2D/3D drafting, modeling, rendering, and importing and rationalizing complex building geometry for optimization using Revit, 3ds Max, Grasshopper3D, Rhino and its Plug-ins, SketchUp, V-Ray, and freehand sketching; developing and designing project booklets and other materials using Adobe Photoshop CS6 or higher version, Adobe illustrator CS6 or higher version, and Adobe InDesign CS6 or higher version; editing narratives, book appendix, and Graphic design perceptions; building physical models and operating and implementing digital fabrication tools including 3d printing/Laser cutting/topology milling; preparing and drafting required files in appropriate format using AutoCAD, Rhino, and Sketch up; preparing presentations using PowerPoint and Prezi; coordinating drawings with consultants and responding to project requests (RFI’s and change orders); reviewing shop drawings from contractor and appropriately responding to them; reviewing material samples and specifications and helping project architect make material selections; document filing and coordinating and developing program calculation spreadsheets using Excel; conducting project site visits, field observation and job site meetings to review the progress of construction and verify design on site.
