Professional Development Specialist, SAFEty

Summary: The Professional Development Specialist conducts training for all levels of staff members who provide services to program participants or support the programs in providing contracted services to participants within SAFEty Initiatives. The Professional Development Specialist is responsible for providing training to all SAFEty employees, developing curricula, conducting new-hire orientation, and assisting the Associate Director of Policy and Training with other tasks as needed. Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Researches and serves as a subject matter expert on relevant topics including organizational rules and processes, new laws (e.g. PREA), industry knowledge, and current training materials, techniques, and strategies.
  • Conducts and analyzes training needs assessments with the programs and develops/updates annual training calendar, lesson plans, and curriculum based on results.
  • Ensures all SAFEty staff is current on trainings and certifications. Responds to the ongoing training needs of each program as identified; including any new policy changes.
  • Helps staff improve upon or enhance existing skills and understand new policy changes.
  • Prepares and conducts training programs for all SAFEty personnel or other individuals/groups as assigned.
  • Facilitates orientation for new staff and volunteers.
  • Prepares train-the-trainer sessions for internal program trainings.
  • Schedules and organizes attendees for staff trainings ( invite staff to trainings, inform managers and trainers of invitations, follow-up with staff that have not responded, confirm final list of attendees, work with SAFEty staff to produce training roster, ensure that training attendees receive all credit for training in Training Manager, NRCYS, CEU, etc.)
  • Oversees actions for staff that miss confirmed trainings which may include rescheduling for next available trainings and informing managers of potential disciplinary actions and/or removal from staff schedules.
  • Performs periodic audits and reviews SAFEty programs to ensure that polices/documents which are presented in trainings have been consistently implemented and are being utilized appropriately.
  • Collaborates with HA IT Department to design online trainings as needed.
  • Researches and identifies new opportunities and resources for external trainings, workshops or seminars appropriate for professional development of program staff.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with Directors, Managers and staff within all SAFEty programs.
  • Travels to various SAFEty program sites to provide trainings and services.
  • Attends program and agency wide meetings, as requested.
  • Prepares appropriate internal and external reports in a regular and timely manner.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

  • Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree in education or a social services field. Minimum of two (2) years of previous training experience within a juvenile justice, residential care, or detention facility or minimum of two (2) years' experience conducting training/presentations for groups of various sizes. Excellent presentation skills. A resilient personality to handle multiple pressures from a variety of audiences and balance their learning needs in accordance with training objectives.
  • Language Skills: Bilingual preferred. Excellent writing skills required. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write reports that present data and other information in a logical and cogent manner. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Other Skills:
  • Must have knowledge in adult learning theories and curriculum development.
  • Ability to use multiple instructional strategies to teach to various learning styles (i.e. interactive, multimedia presentations, monitored simulations, problem solving scenarios) to deliver a variety of topics for organization, licensing, funder and CARF requirements and professional development.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all levels of SAFEty staff and to ask questions or seek direction from supervisory staff when needed.
  • Previous experience in social services or juvenile direct care.
  • Possess outstanding organizational skills and ability to meet established timelines.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of adaptability, comfortable in establishing new directions, managing rapid change and trying different approaches to deal with uncharted territories.
  • Supervisory, teaching, writing, and public speaking skills are essential.
  • Ability to generate enthusiasm, and prioritize and manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Must be able to work independently on projects.
  • Highly organized, thorough, and prompt with a strong work ethic and the ability to complete tasks independently and in a timely manner.
  • Must be flexible in scheduling and have the ability to work in an ever-changing environment.
  • Ability to travel independently to SAFEty sites. Must have regular access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Ability to work during non-traditional hours such as evenings and weekends.
