Donor Community Relations (DCR) Volunteer Manager

Summary: The Volunteer Manager provides functional/operational direction to the organization as it designs, implements, and evaluates a coordinated volunteer management program. As a member of the Donor and Community Relations team, specifically working in Community Engagement, the Volunteer Manager will create a strategic process and set of policies and procedures to make individual volunteering a core component of Heartland Alliance's brand and its donor relations work, with first-year focus on the human services program areas of the organization. The volunteer manager is a motivated self-starter, with experience managing volunteers in a multi-site, multi-faceted organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements a centralized recruitment, management, retention and recognition plan for volunteers with the Community Engagement Manager. Develops and oversees orientation and training for new volunteers in conjunction with program volunteer coordinators.
  • Develops and updates policies and procedures related to volunteers as needed.
  • Plans and conducts quarterly volunteer coordinator meetings.
  • Produces and maintains current resource materials for volunteer use.
  • Participates in Donor and Community Relations activities and events.
  • Recruits individual volunteers for organization events.
  • Participates in the development of long range plans, service delivery model and other significant strategies and/or systems.
  • Plans volunteer events and activities, including National Volunteer Week Activities.
  • Collaborates with internal program staff to identify volunteer needs within departments.
  • Schedules and conducts informational sessions for prospective volunteers.
  • Collaborates with program staff to ensure that volunteer placement is appropriate and successful.
  • Reviews existing policies and procedures for the volunteer program; make recommendations for changes to policies and procedures.
  • Primarily focus on Heartland Human Care Services, the largest of the entities in the Heartland Alliance family, with organization-wide expansion to begin in FY19.
  • Maintains an appropriate professional demeanor towards coworkers, visitors, program participants, supervisors and all others.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Must be flexible to work nights and weekends when required.

  • Education and/or Experience:Bachelor's degree and three to five years of multi-site volunteer management experience required. Experience with large non-profits preferred.
  • Other Qualifications: Valid driver's license. Must be able to travel throughout the Chicago area.
  • Computer Skills:Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance. Experience with Raiser's Edge preferred.
