Catering Chef, part-time weekends

Summary: The Youth and Residential Services program provides residential services for youth ages 0-17 years old who have entered the country without documents and without their parents in a residential setting. The Youth and Residential Services program serves youth mainly from Central and South America, but also sees children from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Fostering an atmosphere of family and security, we attend to the emotional, legal, medical, educational, and recreational needs of the children until they can be reunited with their families either in the U.S. or in their home country.

This position provides catering, food planning and preparation services in accord with program guidelines, applicable sanitation standards and contractual obligations. Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises program participants while in dining or kitchen area.
  • Prepares meals in accord with program needs and applicable food service sanitation standards.
  • Plans menu options within program guidelines and provides documentation, as assigned.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and food items and assists in ordering of goods.
  • Oversees the purchase and delivery of grocery and catering items, as assigned.
  • Receives and processes catering orders and ensures delivery of requested items.
  • Initiates food service preparation and catering for special events.
  • Leads kitchen staff in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Ensures that the kitchen conforms to local health department codes.
  • Assists in the development, planning, and implementation of kitchen / catering operations.
  • Standardize production recipes to ensure consistent quality.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent and three years of relevant experience required. Experience in fine dining / upscale kitchen preferred. May give credit towards years of experience if attained a degree.
  • Language Skills: Bilingual ability preferred.
  • License or Certification: State and city food service sanitation certificate preferred, or must obtain within 3 months of employment.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Food service experience in an institutional setting and catering experience preferred.
  • Other Qualifications: A valid driver's license required. Must successfully pass a background check.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to stand 90% of time.
  • Required to regularly walk, stoop, kneel, and climb.
  • Required to regularly use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to lift/move 40 lbs. and up to 50 lbs. with assistance.
  • Required to work regularly with sharp objects.

  • The employee may be required to remain on Organization premises during breaks and/or meal periods and may be required to stay on Organization premises until their replacement arrives.
