HBO Financial Analyst, Finance Strategy & Planning


Individual will be responsible for financial and strategic analysis of HBO’s business, evolving competitive landscape, and overall media industry; in addition to supporting operating units in a planning capacity. Broader group is responsible for providing financial and strategic support for cross-departmental projects, including:

  • Producing and maintaining advanced knowledge of industry trends and competitive activity
  • Supporting business development and strategy, including developing financial models, business plans, and long-term growth strategies in partnership with operating areas
  • Providing financial and strategic support to operating areas and senior management; including evaluating potential strategic investments
  • Position reports to Manager, Finance Strategy & Planning


  • Prepare strategic and competitive analyses on premium subscription and other relevant media/tech companies (financial projections, key qualitative drivers, and analysis of programming/marketing/digital strategy). Additional responsibilities include:
  • Assessing overall industry and competitive marketplace trends for HBO senior management
  • Issuing quarterly and annual earnings summaries of relevant tech, media, & telecom (TMT) companies
  • Creating and managing detailed operating/financial valuation models
  • Industry research and developing summary reports as needed
  • Attend industry conferences and compile summaries/key themes
  • Periodically evaluate potential investment opportunities in new businesses and technologies; conduct ROI analyses of HBO’s current investments; responsibilities include financial valuation and presentations to management
  • Build financial models and develop strategic assessments to address key business issues, e.g. Evaluation of new business models, emerging technologies, and innovations; competitive analyses; media landscape overviews; programming and content deals; business and operational planning;
  • Provide as needed support for both Time Warner corporate and senior management, including annual strategy reviews, corporate budgets, and CEO/CFO presentations
  • Provide support to HBO operating units, including conducting analyses and preparing presentation materials
  • Create long term plans and other operational planning analyses for both current and new business initiatives, as needed
  • Prepare certain ongoing and ad hoc reports, as requested; prepare analyses to help understand key drivers and variances


  • 1-3 years of prior experience in investment banking, management consulting, sell/buy side research, corporate strategy, or other similar role at media company
  • Financial valuation experience
  • Excellent PowerPoint, Excel and financial modeling experience and skills required
  • Strong research skills
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to manage details; strong grasp of business concepts and demonstrated judgment
  • Ability to prepare and present complex data in a simple, understandable manner
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with and create materials intended across departments and for all levels of management
  • Self-starter, proactive, takes initiative
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while working to meet assigned deadlines
  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Accounting, other quantitative discipline preferred
  • Demonstrated media interest preferred
