Harlem Children’s Zone, Inc (HCZ) is a multi-site, multi-program community organization that provides a unique and comprehensive interlocking network of education, social and health services, and recreation to more than 21,000 children and adults in Central Harlem. Its goal is to create a \u0022tipping point\u0022 in the neighborhood so that children are surrounded by an enriching environment of college-oriented peers and supportive adults. HCZ is nationally and internationally recognized for its early and progressive intervention programs, and has been called “one of the most ambitious social-policy experiments of our time” by The New York Times.

The Harlem Children’s Zone is currently seeking a Maintenance Worker in their Facilities Department. The position entails maintaining a clean and professional work environment within the buildings throughout the agency with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate will be able to perform routine maintenance/custodial checks and tasks to ensure that the assigned sites are being cleaned to the standard set by HCZ and other regulatory agencies (Health Department, Board of Ed).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Gather and empty trash.
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors.
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
  • Vacuum, steam-clean and/or shampoo carpets.
  • Sweep, mop, strip, seal, finish, and/or polish floors.
  • Clean laboratory equipment, such as glassware and metal instruments, using solvents, brushes, rags, and power cleaning equipment.
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Notify immediate supervisor of all facility related items at assigned site.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas as needed.
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must have prior experience and work a flexible schedule
  • Must pass fingerprint background check and Physical/TB test
  • Must be able to follow procedures for safe use of cleaners and equipment, in order to prevent bodily harm and damage to the facility
  • Must be able to perform physical activities that require you to lift, push, pull or carry heavy/large objects
