Staff Accountant

We are a collaborative team of about 100 people across marketing, ops, customer support, product, data, finance and engineering, and our headquarters is located in the heart of New York City in the Flatiron District.

About the role

Handy is looking for a Staff Accountant to carry out the responsibilities of the Finance / Accounting Department. This position reports directly to the Director of Accounting/Controller. We're a startup, so we're looking for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, enthusiasm for our mission to transform home services, and of course, the ability to turn on a dime when necessary.

Primary duties:

  • Own end-to-end monthly close process for revenue recognition and all above margin costs
  • Review product launches for new partnerships and revenue streams and work with product owners to create the reporting necessary to accurately record revenue
  • Perform and/or review other areas of monthly close including, but not limited to, prepaids, accruals and other assets
  • Be the first line of defense each month to ensure no accruals/reversals/bills are missed or double counted during close
  • Onboarding new hires into payroll system and administering payroll (via our payroll provider) on a bi-monthly basis
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date headcount forecast by department
  • Compile departmental budget versus actual analyses on a monthly basis, including providing explanations for variances, to be presented to CEO, COO and departmental heads
  • Assist in compiling internal and external financial data requests
  • Lead the communication to develop a new process for recording/reconciling accounts on an as needed basis
  • Contribute to accounting team's continuous process improvement and always consider ways to make our jobs more efficient


Here are some details about what is required:
  • A Bachelor's degree in accounting (or related) field from an accredited college or university
  • 1-2 years of experience in accounting
  • Public accounting experience a plus, but not required
  • Exceptional knowledge of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Advanced MS Excel skills
  • Highly skilled in dealing with confidential financial information
  • No tolerance for financial sloppiness
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the proven ability to communicate effectively both inside and outside the finance / accounting department
  • Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license a plus, but not required
  • Experience with subscription and/or deferred revenue a plus, but not required
  • Experience with Netsuite a plus, but not required
