Managing Editor

The Hachette Book Group is seeking a Managing Editor for our Grand Central Publishing division. Grand Central publishes more than 300 titles a year across a wide variety of fiction, nonfiction, romance, lifestyle, mystery/thrillers, and pop culture books under the Grand Central, Life & Style, Forever, Forever Yours, Goop Press, and Twelve imprints. The managing editor will report to the Executive Managing Editor.


  • Work closely with the Grand Central publisher and editorial team on seasonal lists to ensure timely delivery of manuscripts, copy, and other materials
  • Develop procedures to improve existing workflows and ensure that interdepartmental best practices and standards are in place
  • Collaborate with the editorial, art, and production departments to schedule and monitor titles through the entire production process
  • Run production and other status meetings and attend various interdepartmental meetings
  • Maintain title data and communicate changes companywide
  • Manage a staff of 7 production editors
  • Manage a few titles per season from manuscript to bound book/e-book, as necessary


  • 5+ years relevant work experience in trade publishing, including illustrated titles
  • Solid copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Strong computer/MS Word skills and knowledge of electronic copyediting and coding
  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style (16th and 17th eds.)
  • Excellent organizational skills, with an aptitude for process development and innovation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Candidate must be detail- and accuracy-oriented and have the ability to balance many projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while maintaining high standards of quality
