This is a scientific leadership role within GSK's growing and dynamic oncology organization. The synthetic lethality research unit is one of four pre-clinical research units, designed to take advantage of the growing revolution in clinical and experimental cancer genomics data.

The successful candidate will serve as part of the unit leadership team and personally direct a research group responsible for the development of a synthetic lethality based oncology portfolio from target initiation through early clinical development. Department activities include target identification, target validation, support of discovery efforts through cellular and mechanistic biology, development of clinical PD biomarkers, and combination discovery efforts.

The successful candidate will also foster cross-functional partnerships with GSK's discovery, clinical, biomarker, functional genomics, and human genetics groups, as well as provide input into GSK's external investments in the field.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful applicant's responsibilities will include:
  • Using data from existing genome wide SL screens and cancer genomics data sources, develop pipelines to identify, prioritize, and validate SL targets.
  • In partnership with GSK's functional genomics partners, develop differentiated CRISPR screen ideas and validate arising targets.
  • Work with the research unit head to analyze potential external investments in programs and technologies and prepare presentations for GSK governance boards to secure funding.
  • Serve as member of the research unit (RU) leadership team, along with the RU head and 2 other senior directors (all based in Boston).
  • Direct a group of 10-15 scientists, developing the drug discovery expertise of cancer biologists in the group.
  • Serve as program lead for cross-functional drug discovery programs, managing activities across discovery matrix experts. Work with clinical and companion diagnostics/ biomarker lead to ensure alignment of preclinical and clinical biomarker strategies
  • Champion GSK cultural and scientific and pillars, including single point of accountability, smart risk taking, and following the science.
  • Lead the writing and editing of documentation for regulatory filings including the biology sections of clinical protocols and investigator brochures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education :
Ph.D. in cancer biology or related fields

Preferred Education:
Same as minimum

Job Experience:
  • A minimum of 10 years of pharmaceutical industry experience in oncology discovery and/or clinical development across a diverse set of drug targets and therapeutic modalities
  • Significant experience managing and leading scientific teams with a track record of developing talent
  • Proven track record of delivering oncology assets into the clinic in partnership with translational medicine groups
  • Literacy/knowledge on how to leverage cancer genomics data and analysis methods for discovery efforts
  • Understanding of clinical trial design and execution (efficacy endpoints, biomarker testing)

  • Experience in managing research collaborations, contract laboratories and budgets
  • Demonstrated scientific capability as evidenced by publications, research reports, and external presentations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills relating to colleagues and associates both inside and outside the corporation

  • Detailed oriented with strong organizational skills in order to manage and meetdeliverables
  • Flexibility to work on multiple projects as the portfolio evolves over time.
