We are currently expanding our CryoEM capability and an exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated protein biochemist with an interest in sample preparation for EM analysis, to join the department of Protein and Cell Sciences at GSK's Medicines Research Centre in Stevenage (PCS UK). The department is engaged in the design, generation and validation of biological reagents to support drug discovery across all of GSK's therapeutic modalities.
You will be a self-motivated protein biochemist with a strong interest in protein expression and purification. You will be responsible for sample generation for CryoEM analysis including the generation and isolation of novel proteins and protein complexes and will work closely with the Structure and Biophysics group at GSK. The ideal candidate for this role will have skills in protein expression, purification, protein isolation as well as experience with sample preparation for CryoEM.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Expression and purification of proteins from a range of expression systems.
  • Protein isolation from endogenous systems
  • Purification of protein complexes and membrane proteins
  • Optimisation for EM sample preparation
  • Protein analytical and biophysical characterisation of prepared samples
  • Molecular biology design and construct generation
  • Teamwork within project teams and department
  • Record keeping of experiments
  • Proactive in bringing in new technologies and ways of working; sharing these with the department

  • Thorough knowledge of protein analytical and biophysical characterisation techniques
  • Track record of flexibility and team work.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good record keeping skills

Preferred Qualifications: If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • Experience of purification of protein complexes and membrane proteins
  • Experience with mammalian and insect cell culture, transfection and expression techniques
  • Experience with molecular biology design and construct generation.
