Position Summary

The Executive Direct or PPM Vaccines is accountable for leading all project management activities within the Vaccines business unit across Research and Development, and work in close collaboration with the SVPs Vaccines Development Leaders' Head to ensure each project is managed in the best way to deliver accelerated plans.

As the leader supporting the Vaccines pipeline, the role has visible accountabilities for working with each Pipeline Project Manager, and with key stakeholders (Vaccines Development Leaders, Finance, Strategy & Portfolio, Research and Development functions etc ) to ensure the quality and robustness of the integrated development plans, and the delivery of the target vaccines profiles on time, and on budget.

The role supports the decision making within the Vaccines business unit, by providing pipeline delivery and performance insight, context, and oversight. The Head PPM Vaccines looks also for the interdependencies between the projects, and within the broader R&D organization, to ensure optimization on the Vaccines pipeline delivery.

The role is critical in ensuring the right sense of urgency and challenge is provided to each pipeline projects in scope and oversees closely the team in driving the projects acceleration agenda. It is expected from this role to work as a senior consultant with the project organization to challenge the project plan and define acceleration opportunities.

Alongside the Vaccines development knowledge and technical project management expertise, the Head PPM Vaccines is a life-science executive with a large number of years of building and managing global Vaccines and/or Drugs development projects across phases and in leading globally diverse Project Management teams. It is also critical that the person in the role has traversed several R&D functions to have a very strong R&D organization intelligence.

The role leads a team from 20 to 50 Pipeline Project Managers, director, senior director and executive director levels.

Key Responsibilities:

In this rewarding and visible role, the Head Pipeline Project Management Vaccines responsibilities are

Build and engage a best-in-class team of Pipeline Project Managers and create the conditions for the team to thrive .

Provide oversight to the pipeline of projects and take responsibility for performance
  • Ensure each project approaching governance have been through solid scenario planning.
  • Provide a sense of urgency and pressure test the plans to ensure they are the best and the fastest they can be.
  • With emphasis on the critical paths of the projects, define and actively track leading indicators of progress towards reaching the pipelines goals.
  • Proactively identify and communicate actions to address or mitigate trends in the pipeline for issues and risks. Engage with all stakeholders to efficiently resolve issues impacting the strategy and key project plans. Ensures all the major pipeline risks have a contingency plan as relevant.
Take responsibility for the overall performance of the Vaccines pipeline,

Work with the Medicine Development Teams to challenge the projects plans and help them defining acceleration opportunities.
  • Drive acceleration workshops where the assumptions of the plan are challenged and dig in into every opportunity to evaluate what it will take to deliver faster.
  • Work with the project teams and the management to remove blockers and enable acceleration.
Provide insights to the R&D Vaccines leaders to enable decision-making at pipeline level
  • Maintain awareness of the Vaccines business, and broader GSK R&D business.
  • Together with senior management, support the definition of the pipeline goals outlining target milestones, deliverables, and clear go/no-go criteria for project transitions.
  • Provide Vaccines projects' delivery performance status and insight to business unit partners and senior leaders to support oversight and decision-making.
  • Act as the 'super' Program Manager of the entire Vaccines pipeline and be the thought partner of the Head of Vaccines Medicines Development leaders.
  • Deliver key inflection points reporting with related risks to partners to anticipate future needs and decisions.
  • Ensure the appropriate review of Project within the Vaccines pipeline is happening to ensure alignment with strategy, optimal decision-making/governance pathways, and optimize delivery of the projects.
  • Participate to Vaccine Leadership Teams, Steering committees etc. as relevant.
  • Member of the Development Review Board for Vaccine projects.
Lead the development of optimized processes for PPM and act as a PPM Leadership Team member
  • Be a member of the core PPM Leadership Team.
  • Stay current with Project Management tools and methodologies in GSK and in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Support the development and implementation of strategies to establish and maintain Project Management capability (tools, processes, ways of working, knowledge, skills) to enable GSK R&D to deliver its pipeline effectively and productively.
  • Participate to external conference to learn from others, share best practices and represent GSK in industry dialogues
Job related Experience:
  • This role requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of Project Management and Drugs/Vaccines Development processes and the capabilities required to successfully drive continual improvement and performance in a highly regulated industry. The Head PPM Vaccines is central in driving accelerated plan and this is only possible when you have that extensive knowledge.
  • Proven credibility with R&D leaders as well as Strategic Partners at executive level.
  • Comfortable working in ambiguity where a pathway may not be clear, understanding desired outcomes, defining problem statements, and deploying in partnership interventions to seek capability build and continual improvement.
Basic Qualifications
  • Successfully completed Advanced degree in Life Science MSc or MPharm
  • Several years of experience in drugs and/or vaccines development, with experience across multiple assets (track records of project managing >5 large development projects managed in a large pharma and/or biotech across phases)
  • Vast experience in leading large global and diverse teams of Project Managers.
  • Experience in several pharma R&D functions (CMC, Clinical Development and/or Operations, Regulatory Affairs, Medical Affairs, etc.).
  • Experience in developing strategic recommendations highly relevant to the therapeutic area and in working with senior leadership teams to identify novel solutions to both project-specific and portfolio wide issues.
  • Proven track records of driving acceleration of projects plan, by challenging to function on planned timelines to develop accelerated plan.
  • Deep multi-disciplinary biopharmaceutical drugs and/or vaccines development knowledge. Advanced understanding of CMC/product development, Clinical Development Plan and projects plan requirements, including filing expectations (FDA/EMA), Regulatory strategies and Submission plan.
  • Extensive Matrix Leadership experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education qualification PhD /MD and/ or MBA
  • P harmaceutical drug development certification.
  • Project/Program Management Professional (PMP or equivalent).
  • Strong experience with project management tools such as Planisware and/or MS Project, and computer proficiency.
  • Ability to foster a strong collaborative spirit internally and externally.
  • Strong business awareness and In-depth understanding of several of the drugs development phases.
  • Experience working independently with senior executives and the ability to quickly build personal credibility and assimilate business issues/ need .
  • Demonstrated skill operating in situations characterized by complexity, ambiguity and high levels of uncertainty.

The salary range for this role is: $186,431 to $252,230
