The role of communications in building a vibrant science hub in Boston is key to the delivery of our SxTxC strategy. A Boston-based marketing and communications expert will ideally possess a scientific communications background, creative marketing skillsets and proven success in developing and leading community engagement programs.
Our approach to R&D focuses on science related to the immune system, the use of human genetics and advanced technologies, and is driven by the multiplier effect of Science x Technology x Culture. It will help us to accelerate the pace at which we develop and deliver transformational medicines, prioritizing those molecules with a higher probability of success and terminating less promising programmes. It also enables us to increase our focus on specialty medicines in areas such as oncology. To that end, our growth in oncology in the short- and long-term is underpinned by brilliant scientists and collaborations in key biotech markets, such as Boston.
The Director, Marketing & Communications will serve as a key member of the R&D communications team and will lead marketing and communications efforts designed to drive a substantial increase in awareness of GSK's mission and presence in the Boston community.
This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. These responsibilities include some of the following:
- Engage with external stakeholders in the Boston biopharma community
- Increase awareness of GSK's presence in the Boston area and
- Partner closely with R&D site leaders in Waltham and Cambridge
- Partner with HR and Org Development colleagues in support of culture and engagement activities
- Enthusiastic and effective communicator with extensive knowledge of and experience in the pharma/biotech industry
- Passionate driver for 'strategic marketing' of GSK's mission in Boston with top academics, industry professionals, professional consortiums (MassBio), leaders in the Boston Biopharma scene, patient groups and charities.
- Leader and Secretariat of the GSK Boston Leadership Council to coordinate activities across GSK sites and draw on GSK leaders for Boston related marketing and communication needs
- GSK business and relationship liaison with Boston Biotech Community for communication, marketing and culture related engagements
- Define, advertise and enroll (with Site Leader and BD engagement team help) organizational participation in 'Boston Calendar' of events that facilitates broad visibility and promotion of GSK in Boston
- Liaise with Boston based site leadership teams and other GSK leaders to promote broad awareness and key participation in select events e.g. seminars, promotional/business opportunity meetings, awareness events, patient outreach events/programs and charity events.
- Secure budget to support communication and outreach activities that are for the purpose of engaging the Boston Biopharma community and strengthening the GSK presence in Boston. Develop and execute internal R&D communications strategies
- Serve as a strategic advisor to R&D senior leaders
- Serve as a mentor to junior-level team members
- Role model GSK values and expectations and our R&D culture
Why you? Basic Qualifications: We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Minimum 10 years of communications related experience, including 7 years of demonstrated expertise in at least three of the following areas:
- Strategic marketing communications experience building and executing community outreach plans and campaigns
- Knowledge in Pharmaceutical Life Sciences
- Experience in narrative development and storytelling, designing, developing and creating new media (e.g. video, digital, storytelling/infographics)
- Experience in brand, culture, engagement and change management work
- Experience developing content across a range of platforms and media (digital-friendly, visual/storytelling style, such as videos and infographics); versatility in creating both branded and unbranded content and willingness to innovate
- Experience in designing, planning and executing large meetings for internal audiences, with attention to detail and the full audience-experience
- Strategic marketing communications experience building and executing community outreach plans and campaigns
- Senior executive support and thought leadership experience
- Preferred experience within Research & Development
- Strong interpersonal skills with multiple and diverse stakeholders
- Strategic and creative thinker who knows how to construct compelling stories from complex information that will resonate with a variety of internal and external audiences (i.e., scientists, sales, marketing, manufacturing, academics, etc.)
- Strong project management skills
