About the Great Oaks Foundation
The Great Oaks (GO) Foundation is a non-profit organization with the mission of launching and supporting a network of charter schools and partner schools that prepare students for college success through high-dosage tutoring coupled with outstanding classroom instruction. By design, GO schools and partner schools contribute to the vitality of the urban neighborhoods where they are located by attracting and creating social, human and investment capital.
What sets Great Oaks schools and partner schools apart from other college preparatory charter schools is a high-dosage tutoring model provided by the AmeriCorps Fellows, a selective cadre of recent college graduates who tutor and mentor every student in the school. This is a crucial strategy in Great Oaks schools and partner schools to improve achievement and prepare teachers to continue the work in education.
The Great Oaks Foundation has successfully replicated this program in Newark, NJ; Bridgeport, CT; New York, NY and Wilmington, DE. We have launched a recent partnership with Baltimore Collegiate to launch the Collegiate Fellows program. A select group of AmeriCorps Fellows are enrolled in a Teacher Residency program that is being conducted in partnership with NYU’s Steinhardt School of Education and Relay Graduate School of Education.
The Deputy Director of GO Fellow Program Development will ensure the continual improvement and development of the GO Fellowship model in 3 core areas:
Instruct for Mastery- The GO Fellowship, with its intense focus on individualized instruction, changes education outcomes for students in partnership with high quality teaching. Small group instruction delivered in the context of a supportive relationship between student and AmeriCorps Fellow will result in a significant increase in student math and ELA achievement.
Mentor for Leadership- Fellows have a fundamental role in supporting students in their social and emotional growth. Fellows encourage their students through coaching conversations to have personal investment in their success and to build an understanding that they have control over their lives. Fellows help empower our students to evolve into leaders.
Develop a Community- Fellows will help to develop Great Oaks schools into a positive, holistic community for students. AmeriCorps members will also develop as people and professionals. Fellows stay in constant contact with families, support enrichment opportunities for students and develop into community leaders as the year progresses. Through an embedded Teacher Residency Program, the GO Fellowship provides a pipeline of certified, clinically trained educators into the communities we serve, but is also dedicated to ensuring that this pipeline is diverse and representative of our student community. The GO Fellowship develops emerging professionals as promising leaders and classroom teachers.

Reporting to the Chief Program Officer for GO Fellows, the Deputy Director of GO Fellow Program Development is responsible for ensuring a high quality Great Oaks Fellowship program. The Deputy Director of GO Fellow Program Development has the following key responsibilities:
Model & Program Implementation
- Collaborate with GOF Academic Team and site-basted Fellow Directors to:
- ensure students are receiving high quality, high dosage math and ELA small group instruction
- create systems to support Fellows in effective planning periods for organizing adapting and preparing instructional material
- plan additional academic supports in after-school programming and Saturday Academy
- systematize student goal setting
- leverage content focused meetings with leadership, teachers and Fellows
- Work closely with the National AmeriCorps team, site-based leadership teams and the Great Oaks Foundation Academic team to continue to improve the GO Fellowship model
- Monitor and assess the implementation of the GO Fellow Program and the deployment of Fellows network-wide
- Aggregate challenges, trends, and best practices to inform GO Fellowship model design and organizational strategy
- Utilize data to provide actionable solutions in the continuous improvement of program implementation and member impact
- Assess and strengthen the quality of the Fellow experience across the network
- Execute the Fellow Arc of Experience, including milestones for Fellow development, culture and connectivity
- Improve strategies for small group instruction, tutorial structure and implementation of model
- Build a collaborative culture among site-based staff and Fellows
- Oversee the monitoring of GO Fellow and GO Fellow Lead effectiveness in impacting student learning and support schools to make the appropriate adjustments to their support and management of Fellows
- Build strong advisory relationships with service-site leadership in accordance with the service site partnership agreements. Ensure consistent progress toward effective model implementation of the core aspects of the model in Instruct, Mentor, Develop and impactful member experience
- Steward external relationships with school partners
- Partner with school leadership to effectively integrate Fellows into Great Oaks sites and partner sites
- Work across schools to build systems for ensuring progress of GO Fellow program
- Create network-wide supports for leadership working with Fellows and ensure systems for supporting development of under-performing Fellows
- Build authentic relationships with site-based staff
- Support the National AmeriCorps team with ensuring adherence of AmeriCorps compliance requirements at each site
- Act as liaison between school partners and the Great Oaks Foundation to ensure program alignment
- Ensure collaboration and coordination across the Great Oaks network’s instructors, site-based leadership, Fellow leadership and the Great Oaks Foundation
- Provide weekly support, feedback and guidance to site-based Fellow leadership
- Collaborate with National AmeriCorps team to develop the GO Fellows Citizenship Program, GO Fellows Career Readiness Program, GO Fellows Alumni and Advisory Board Engagement Program, and to ensure high quality GO Fellow team building, appreciation, and reflection activities
Network-wide Professional Learning
- Identify and design professional growth opportunities for site-based leadership and GO Fellows
- Support the implementation of the Professional Online Learning Community in Google Classroom
- Collaborate with Great Oaks Foundation Academic team to create network-wide professional learning days (i.e. Great Oaks Forum, WInter Summit and Beyond the Corps Day)
- Develop training materials on preparation and delivery of small group instruction
- Collaborate with school based Fellow Leadership to ensure that each Fellow is receiving observations and feedback (at minimum) every other week.
- Support school-based staff in developing systems to capture feedback
- Collaborate with the National AmeriCorps and Academics teams to build a learning community focused on coaching, management, effective small group instruction, and the use of data to improve student outcomes
- In partnership with school-based leadership, plan, develop, organize, and occasionally direct professional development for Fellows to ensure learning is meaningful, effective, utilized and aligned to school trends and need
Qualifications and Competencies:
The successful candidate will be an experienced educational leader, with proven success in an academic or non-profit setting. The successful candidate will also bring some or all of the following:
- Ability to travel to geographically distributed schools, primarily in New York City and Bridgeport, CT. Approximately 60% of the position is spent working in schools
- Ability to evaluate instructional and SEL practice.
- Excellent relationship builder with experience managing diverse stakeholders, leading change, and promoting strong teamwork
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in the field of education: a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience preferred
- Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience of a team through coordination of key efforts
- Experience leading emerging professionals
- Experience working with urban, underserved youth
- Experience working with AmeriCorps or recent college graduates; experience as an Americorps service member is a plus
- Experience developing and facilitating professional development and workplace learning programs
- Proven ability to teach adults effectively
- Ability to navigate a complex inter-institutional partnership
- Inspiring, dynamic, transformational leader and culture builder
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Public Administration or relevant field experience preferred
- Self confidence, flexibility and the ability to respond well to feedback
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
