Professional Development & Training Manager

Job Summary:

Goodwin has an opportunity for a creative, collaborative and solutions-minded manager to join its innovative Professional Development & Training (PD&T) team. The manager will partner with the firm's Managing Director, Professional Development & Training ("Managing Director") and Senior Manager, Attorney Training ("Senior Manager") to develop and implement cutting edge programs to onboard, train, mentor, coach, develop, engage, and retain outstanding attorneys, with a central focus on the firm's Business Law (corporate) practices and professional development initiatives. The manager will also work directly with our Business Law Department, Business Unit and Legal Practice Area leader teams to design trainings and advise on training best practices.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Overall: Work with the Managing Director and Senior Manager to design and implement programs focused on attorney onboarding; core legal and professional skills; leadership development; and cultural initiatives around engagement, work-life effectiveness, diversity and inclusion, and other areas. Work with the Managing Director and Senior Manager to design and implement an innovative and impactful Business Law curriculum, including curriculum for the Business Law Business Units and Legal Practice Areas, plus core skills training programs in the areas of feedback, people and project management, business development, and communications skills. Also work with the Managing Director and Senior Manager on the firm's multi-day leadership programs and coaching initiatives.

  2. Work with the Managing Director, Senior Manager and Attorney Development Managers to propose and implement plans for improving new and lateral associate integration into the firm to ensure better associate engagement, a greater sense of commitment to the firm and better associate retention.

  3. Work with the Managing Director and Senior Manager to continue to build core legal and professional skills training programs to support associate and professional track attorney development of core competencies, and to develop a core curriculum of training for the business units and practice areas (with a central focus on Business Law).

  4. Work with the Managing Director, Senior Manager, Attorney Development Managers and Business Units to develop an approach for the business units to monitor their pipeline of talent, identify the needs of attorneys in the group, and provide appropriate client opportunities, training, mentoring, coaching, and resources to help them develop.

  5. Work with the Professional Development & Training team to holistically improve all firm training programs and tools to be more interactive, practical and effective, applying advanced adult learning theory and technologies.

  6. Work with the Managing Director, Senior Manager and Human Resources group to develop and implement effective and consistent programs to enhance the work/life effectiveness for attorneys and staff.

  7. Work with the Legal Recruitment, Knowledge Management, Attorney Development and Business Unit teams to ensure that any programs and initiatives are connected and complementary to their initiatives.

  8. Maintain an understanding of the firm's competitors and their professional development programs to ensure that the firm remains at the forefront of the field.

  9. Work with the Professional Development & Training team to develop a more useful and interactive internal portal for the team, where associates can track competencies at various levels and links to recommended training or coaching opportunities where they have development needs.

  10. Assume additional responsibilities as requested.

RequirementsJob Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's Degree required; Juris Doctorate and Business Law/Corporate background strongly preferred.

  2. Minimum of 4 years of practice in a large law firm and/or 3 years of professional development experience in a leading professional services firm. Coaching certification or experience and/or teaching experience considered a plus. Familiarity with organizational development and/or adult learning techniques, principles, theory and online learning technologies also considered a plus.

  3. Excellent attention to detail, organizational, interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills, as well as the ability to listen well, take initiative and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Must be a diplomatic and creative problem solver and possess superior judgment, and be able to protect and maintain confidential and sensitive information. Must be able to build trust in wide variety of sensitive, one-on-one coaching situations.

  4. Ability to travel to multiple firm office locations, including international offices, as necessary.
