VP Global Head, Pharma Patents

Your Responsibilities:
Reporting to the SVP Global Patents, the VP, Head of Pharma Patents is responsible for overseeing the patent support for the Pharma business and Pharma R&D, and alongside the SVP Global Patents and the Head of US Patent Policy, is responsible for the setting and external advocacy of Pharma Patent Policy.

As the VP, Head of Pharma Patents you will work very closely with senior stakeholders across the business including:

• CSO and President Pharma R&D
• President, Global Pharma
• Head of Global Franchises and Platforms
• SVP and General Counsel, Global Pharma
• SVP, R&D Pipeline
• SVP, Platform Tech and Sciences

As an integral member of the Global Patents Leadership Team you will be responsible and accountable for all of GSK's patenting activities pertaining to its Pharma products and developmental candidates, as well as innovations discovered and developed in the R&D Platform Science and Technology group.

You will have oversight of and accountability for the preparation and prosecution of patent applications that protect GSK's Pharma inventions. In addition, you will also evaluate GSK's rich near and mid-term Pharma pipeline against the patent claims of third parties, and put strategies in place to ensure that GSK can launch these products in a way which respects the valid third party patents of others.

This is a role that can truly impact GSK and its R&D efforts, allowing us to recoup the necessary return on our R&D investment to support future R&D and at the same time ensure a fair return to our investors. As the VP, Head of Pharma Patents decisions made within your remit, and the advice rendered to R&D and business leaders, may ultimately dictate the return on billions of pounds in R&D investment by GSK.

Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership and management to over 50 patent attorneys in the US and UK, as well as external patent attorneys

You will set IP strategies for each of our Pharma R&D areas and Platform Sciences groups, and procure and defend patent portfolios that protect GSK's assets in line with those strategies

Provide advice, counsel and oversight for intellectual property aspects of GSK Pharma R&D

Work with SVP global patents and US Government Affairs, to monitor developments in Pharma patent policy as well as set and advocate externally the GSK position on Pharma patent policy

Provide significant leadership within Global Patents, and will provide broader leadership beyond your business area

Liaise with the President Pharma R&D, and SVP Franchise Head to ensure that GSK launches assets with the best possible patent position

Technical Skills & Experience

Significant experience of corporate patent practice, including filing and prosecution, due diligence, business development support, litigation and/or other inter partes proceedings.

Experience of managing one or more teams of patent attorneys and/or agents including remote teams

Experienced in working with and advising senior stakeholders

Business acumen - ability to monetize and demonstrate what Global Patents can deliver to the business

Demonstrable influencer of senior stakeholders

Excellent leadership/communication skills

Deep technical expert

Ability to navigate ambiguity and develop a strategy

Gravitas and confidence but not overbearing
