Vice President, Head of Functional Genomics
Functional Genomics is a fundamental pillar of the R&D Strategy being implemented by Hal Barron and the R&D Leadership Team. GSK is aiming to be at the forefront of a potentially new technological revolution in the pharmaceutical industry by scaling advances in genomic engineering, advances in tissue and cell science, advances in computational biology and advances in omic technology. Combined with the ability to measure the functional consequences of a genetic change on a cell, GSK is committed to applying these technologies to target validation as well as target discovery.
The Functional Genomics group will comprise several disciplines that provide the deep science and technology required to validate potential targets comings from human genetics and discover new ones based on genome scale editing and endophenotyping in well-characterised human cells. Core functions will include genetic engineering, omics, cell and tissue science and computational biology.
Reporting to the SVP Medicinal Science & Technology, the Head of Functional Genomics will be responsible for the delivery of work to support ongoing projects and to continually seek approaches that will place GSK R&D at the cutting edge of target discovery and validation.
As part of your responsibilities you will make recommendations and decisions on the portfolio and on any new scientific platforms or technologies that could be brought to bear in this space.

a) identify and validate targets
b) ensure GSK has access to cutting edge gene editing capacity and capability
c) provide a state of the art tissue and cell science capability including tissue characterization by omics and imaging and comparative cell biology with deep phenotyping for genome-scale screening purposes
d) provide state of the art omics capabilities and build an understanding of their integration into endophenotypes characteristic of disease particularly for cancer and immunology
e) provide an infrastructure and capability for data acquisition, processing and analysis to support experimental design and decision making
f) works closely with Research groups to ensure all experiments are jointly designed and have strong sponsorship so that emerging targets represent competitive propositions for portfolio entry (C2T = Commit 2 Targets)
