Global Procurement, Innovation Manager
We are currently seeking an Innovation Manager, Consumer Healthcare R&D (CHR&D) to join Global Procurement's Centre of Excellent (CoE) Project Management & Innovation team based at either the Warren, NJ or London, UK sites. This role will work together with a second Innovation Manager role, also situated within this team, to jointly deliver shared goals.
Job Purpose: In this role the successful applicant will be accountable for delivery of the dedicated target (%, £M) of CHR&D's annual Year 3 Pipeline Innovation Sales objective. Additionally, candidate will be responsible for expanding the role to identify new areas of the business to support with analogous approach and methodology (including the Pharma, Vaccines and ViiV business units).
Background: Consumer Healthcare has a well-established portfolio of brands and products across all therapeutic areas: Skin Health, Oral Health, Respiratory, Pain, and Nutrition/ Gastrointestinal. To ensure continuous alignment with consumer known and unmet needs, growth for the company, and most importantly the introduction of products to improve lives, GSK must tirelessly aim to establish a pipeline of innovation. Innovation stems from many sources, one of which is external partners. Procurement is uniquely situated to access the broad network of existing and not yet existing external partners to GSK and create partnerships with these external parties to deliver innovation. Procurement may also bring forward market trends and technologies to test applicability with GSK categories or interest in above category.
Collaborate closely with the CHR&D External Innovation team to gain clear visibility into current state priorities and new needs/wants from the categories and exchange quickly via proper channels and forums to prioritize ideas. Attend strategic meetings and be deeply involved into key decisions.
Create a clear path and plan to deliver 20-25% (£80-100M) of the CHR&D External Innovation team's 2019 objective of approximately £400M in Year 3 Pipeline Innovation Sales through suppliers, with a governance process to track performance and delivery against set milestones and metrics, including key lead KPIs to show progress to senior leadership.
Take leadership role in connecting all relevant parties contributing to the CHR&D External Innovation agenda, including but not limited to Procurement (Commercial, Directs & Sites, CMO), CHR&D Internal, External, and Packaging Innovation, CH Commercial/Marketing, CHR&D Business Development, etc. to ensure effective "ways of working", eliminating any duplicative efforts, exploiting the unique capabilities of each party, and forming one "voice" to suppliers.
Focus time and effort in the following priority areas:
- Digital Health Innovation
- Product Innovation (Ingredients, formulation and new formats)
- Packaging Innovation
- Innovation in Emerging Markets
Build and maintain a living list of suppliers to be considered for future innovation work based on knowledge of capabilities, joint investment opportunities, and demonstration of drive to partner on innovation development. Select a subset of suppliers which can be mentored in a strategic relationship to drive significant joint future innovation towards category needs. Set up and build appropriate governance to enable joint innovation with strategic suppliers including technology, legal framework and process. Aim to become client of choice of suppliers for incubation and innovation. Generate competition amongst suppliers to quickly source top ideas and proposals in response to GSK business problems.
Work with supplier diversity team on collaboration with small and diverse suppliers as a source of innovation. Leverage start up networks, accelerators and other sources to access new innovative suppliers for GSK.
Identify key industry conferences or forums to actively engage in and create a network of industry counterparts to perform regular benchmarking for best practice sharing to continually improve approach and operations to drive greatest organic company growth.

- Qualified to Degree level-4 year Bachelor's Degree
- Minimum 3 years of work experience
- Strong track record of senior stakeholder management and influencing; ability to influence without express authority; ability to build strong relationships
- Experience managing suppliers (including performance management), developing new potential suppliers and partnering with supply base for mutual benefit
- Very strong communication and presentation skills; ability to appropriately represent GSK externally
- Business Case development and assessment
- Problem solving and strategic thinking
- Financial acumen and demonstrated analytical skills: The role requires the ability to develop sophisticated commercial proposals that align with the business's needs. A strong understanding of business and financial analysis will facilitate success. Ability to communicate with senior Finance, R&D and Commercial managers is required.
- Further academic qualification, for example MBA, CIPS, MCIPS
- 5 years of experience with a focus on innovation in R&D or in a scientific background
- Scientific studies: Biology, Chemistry
