Global Head of Customs

Basic qualifications:

Degree level education (any discipline) plus a professional Tax/International trade/accounting qualification (e.g. CTA or equivalent)

Customs technical knowledge, particularly in the area of the international movements of goods, plus and understanding of the interaction of Customs Duties with VAT, transfer pricing and corporate income tax

Experience of working in Customs in a multinational manufacturing/distribution business, offering proactive decision support to the business, particular as regards the management of Customs risks

Experience of an organisation with a shared service for key elements of Customs responsibility and the deployment of offshore and outsourced tax compliance resource, combined with a working knowledge of the issues around standardizing and streamlining Customs processes, and designing the appropriate controls for that process.

Knowledge of ERP systems (particularly SAP) how systems are used in the management of Indirect Tax accounting

Knowledge of wider trade compliance issues and how they interact with Customs specific activities

Indirect Tax ERP/Tax accounting software knowledge is required to understand the impact that good Indirect Tax system design can have on risk management and control and the consequent deployment of tax and compliance resources.

Project management skills are required to enable the proper implementation of both Customs driven projects and the Customs implications of broader projects, both of which will require the co-ordination of resources across multi-disciplinary teams.

Preferred qualifications:

Problem solving skills and the intellectual agility to understand and analyze complex business circumstances from a Customs perspective to identify all the issues and the potential P&L effects; impacted areas and the co-dependencies involved in designing a solution

Proven communication skills

Negotiation and mediation skills

Demonstrated ability to design and deliver Customs technical training to staff executing Customs decisions

Ability to influence functions outside Global Tax in order to secure resource input to execute on Customs management priorities (e.g. Finance Directors, Logistics teams, CBS Process owners etc.)

Proven leadership skills to manage, motivate and develop a team of Tax technical specialists

Details:

As Global Head of Customs you will report directly to the Global Head of Trade Compliance.

This is a role that will lead the development, communication and execution of an effective Customs strategy across the GSK enterprise. This will include operating an effective risk management process that provides full visibility on all risks and issues and a strategy for managing those risks;

Manage and continually develop a robust governance framework that ensures all aspects of Customs are appropriately controlled and prioritized.

Evaluate and manage the effective implementation of Customs optimisation opportunities.

Provide timely, relevant, practical and proactive business decision support within the framework of the Customs Strategy.

Actively manage Customs resource across geographies and business units to cost-effectively deliver the above and you will need to co-ordinate resources from a number of teams (Global Tax/CBS Finance/IT/Supply Chain and external consultants) to deliver on objectives.
