Director Medical Affairs

Basic qualifications:

  • Medical degree required
  • Minimum 4 years of Industry experience in a medical function, with leadership experience, but additional experience may be required depending on the scale and complexity of the LOC.
  • Medical knowledge, understanding patient perspectives, experience in managing patient care, having sound judgement in benefit/risk evaluation on patient safety issues, interacting with HCPs on a peer to peer basis and working in the healthcare environment, are core areas of competences. All of these components require deep medical understanding and medical experience.

Preferred qualifications:

  • The role of the Country Medical Director is to provide leadership to the team and ensure appropriate Medical Governance. As a member of country management team, this role is expected to identify and mitigate risks & manage issues.


Job Purpose:

  • To provide Medical leadership for the LOC, and overall accountability for Medical governance and all Medical Department activities in the country.
  • To demonstrate leadership and accountability for all scientific / external engagement activities conducted in the LOC, and to ensure these are in line with GSK standards and values.
  • To ensure the development and execution of Medical Affairs strategies and plans that are aligned with the business strategies for commercialization of medicines of value to our patients and customers.
  • To ensure that medical insights contribute effectively to the development of new medicines and vaccines, registration and launch of new products, design and execution of evidence generation activities, and appropriate communication of scientific evidence, ensuring at all times that the patients' interests remain at the forefront of all activities conducted by the Medical Department.
  • To ensure there is an effective talent development and succession planning process in place for all key Medical roles in the LOC.

Key Responsibilities:

1.To demonstrate strong Medical leadership and accountability for overall Medical governance within the LOC, and the management of all the Medical functions.

2.To lead the Medical Department in the provision of high quality Medical and Scientific strategic input and insights to the Pharma and Vaccine businesses (at local and global level if needed), and ensure successful execution of the Medical Plans to the desired outcomes and timelines.

3.To embed the principles and practices of Scientific Engagement (SE) within the organization and drive the conceptualization and implementation of SE activities such as advisory boards and medical education programs. This includes Medical leadership in appropriate external engagement with key external experts, investigators, academia, government officials, media and other stakeholders under the respective governance frameworks, in order to develop, maintain, and enhance our reputation and trust with external stakeholders.

4.To lead the Medical Governance Committee (or equivalent), to actively contribute to the local RMCB, and local crisis management committee, to ensure that the highest standards of Medical Governance are practised within the LOC across all its functions and businesses. This also includes ensuring appropriate management and deployment of local Medical resources and capabilities (in collaboration with the GM) in order to adequately meet local governance expectations and internal/external standards.

5.Governance of specific functions - To ensure that appropriate processes are in place to meet the required standards while responding to Medical Information requests from local HCPs and customers. To ensure maintenance of an effective local Pharmacovigilance system and processes, to comply with local regulations and GSK global PV requirements. For countries in which Regulatory is part of the Medical Department - To ensure oversight and delivery of all regulatory affairs activities to the required internal and local external standards, with support from global/regional Regulatory Affairs Head.

6.To provide Medical leadership, input, and guidance into local HTA submissions and publications. This may include governance oversight of Health Economics & Outcomes research for local market access purposes, in partnership with other central functions such as PCPS and GHO.

7.For countries represented on the Franchise Board - To collaborate closely with/ give medical strategic input and stakeholder insights into the franchise/s. To maintain and leverage effective participation to ensure that LOC business needs are adequately reflected in the medicine development plans. Where the countries are not directly represented on the Franchise Board - To collaborate closely with franchise Area Medical Leads to provide medical strategic inputs to ensure LOC business needs are adequately communicated to the franchise board.

8.To ensure appropriate medical governance oversight and risk management for all Clinical studies conducted in the country, and that subjects and patients are not placed at unnecessary risk from their participation in the same. For studies operated through local Clinical Operations, to ensure a focus on quality (in compliance with local regulations, GCP Guidelines and internal SOPs), and performance

9.To foster a leadership culture that attracts and retains high potential and high performance personnel, develops them within the organization and actively helps them to secure opportunities in the wider organization as appropriate. To ensure there is effective succession planning process in place for all key Medical roles in the LOC.
