Job Description Summary

Due to continued growth in business and secured long term projects. The GE Power Conversion team are looking to recruit the role of Lead Applications Engineer focusing on Industry (Metals, Power & Water) segment related to Drives & Power Systems. Joining the present team, you will be working on exciting and challenging projects. You will be required to have industry experience and have been working in a similar type role.

Application Engineer, to provide optimum solutions to the Customers for Products / Solutions for various Industries for involving Motors, Variable Frequency Drives & Power Systems based on customer requirements. He/She shall work in conjunction with the sales team as the key technical advisor and product advocate. He/She must be able to identify and provide reliable solutions for technical challenges to assure complete customer satisfaction. Lead Application Engineer must be able to establish and maintain strong relationships with customers.

The role has some autonomy but is focused on execution of activities within an operating discipline covered by standard functional practices and procedures. Some judgment may be required but this is typically with guidance.

Although reporting into our main office in Chennai with travel across India.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provides technical expertise and develops technical solutions (configuration, performance estimation, economics, etc.) as part of the pre-ITO (requisition) process while interfacing with the commercial team. Possesses a deep understanding of relevant markets and customer economic value that aid winning bid strategies. To include 'ITO': Technical analysis of client need: definition and optimization of the products; scope (description); schedule; industrial scheme; cost, considering contract and internal policies and procedures. Documentation of technical specifications & costing elements for further contract execution phases. This also includes OTR part where engineers work on customizing the products and implementing it for specific customer needs
  • Developing in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline. Uses prior experience and acquired technical expertise to execute policy/strategy. Must possess Power system and Drive background, ability to do Drive, Transformer sizing & strong technical background and the ability to discuss complex technical requirements with customers.
  • In-depth understanding of key business drivers; uses this understanding to accomplish own work. In-depth understanding of how work of own team integrates with other teams and contributes to the area.
  • Uses some level of judgment and has ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters but with guidance. Uses prior experience and on-the-job training to solve straightforward tasks. Has access to technical skills and analytic thinking required to solve problems. May use multiple internal sources outside of own team to arrive at decisions.
  • A job at this level is likely to be an individual contributor with proven interpersonal skills or an early people leader who can hire and develop talent. Provides informal guidance to new team members
  • Understanding of competitor offers and solutions.
  • Reading and commenting customer technical requirements, aligning offering with scope of supply, delivering timely and quality responses for customer requests.
  • Providing technical support during customer meetings, product presentations and negotiations.
  • Supporting the local Sales organization/customers in determining the most technically appropriate and cost-effective solutions as well as the preparation of technical offers.
  • Reviewing the proposals received with sub-suppliers and checking feasibility with customer requirements.
  • Collaborating with relevant functions in the region (Engineering, Commissioning, Sourcing) / Global to identify a technically feasible and optimal techno-commercial proposal.
  • Identify technical risks and put in place the mitigation plan.
  • Adherence to the Tendering process
  • Ability to multitask and change priorities based on business needs to consistently meet and exceed customer expectations.
  • Identify and implement measures for cost optimization
  • Drive lessons learned, best practices and standardization into Technical Proposals
  • Review solutions developed and identify opportunities for improvement of process, system, or equipment.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all company and customer's EHS policies and procedures
  • Identify and propose improvements in processes, tools, system solutions and technologies, rolling out improvements when agreed with leadership team.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's / Master's degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years of Industry experience
  • A solid technical background in the field of Medium Voltage Drives and Power Systems.
  • 5+ years' experience in the role of Application Engineering for Industry or any other domains for solutions based on Variable Speed Drive System and Automation
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Capable of working with multi-disciplined international team with good personal organization skills.
  • A strong drive to succeed
  • Proficient knowledge of Application Engineering tools (e.g., Sales force, OCS)

  • Proven experience in Tendering of similar products / solution
  • Ability to understand customer needs and identify market trends.
  • Ability to work independent.
  • Knowledge on the pricing of similar products /solutions of International range of suppliers.
  • Knowledge on Indian / International Standards / regulations in the market we are operating.
  • Knowledge on the costing tools / methodology adapted for Tendering process.
  • Strong problem solving, business and analytical abilities
  • Experience in working in cross-functional environment.
  • Proven ability to effectively lead and guide people
  • Strong prioritizing and time management skills
  • Willing to travel on short notice within base country and overseas for short/long term assignments
  • Personality with analytical and methodical approach.
  • A collaborative, solutions-oriented approach, and strong communication skills.
