Principal Performance Engineer


Drive performance and stability improvements for critical applications & infrastructure to ensure Gartner is providing the best user experience possible when interacting with our internal and external facing applications and services.

Collaborate with, and in some cases drive, cross functional teams of application developers, system engineers, DBAs, architects, application owners, and outside vendors to identify, document, recommend, and implement performance improvement solutions.

Provide deep dive and forensic analysis to assist on performance enhancements and identification of application defects. Use analysis to make recommendations and drive results.

Provide service-based dashboards and KPI-driven reports for management and other teams within IT

Assist in the design and implementation of scalable/automated monitoring and logging solutions across the enterprise, including strategies for cloud, container, IaaS, SaaS, etc

Assist with the support and advancement of our APM, NPM, and Log Management portfolio of tools and services. Where possible help to broaden usage of these tools across IT teams.

Ensure the proper application and infrastructure instrumentation is enabled/tuned for high value applications and help to devise solutions for visibility challenges in a cloud and/or container architecture



Qualifications:



Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or related discipline, or equivalent work experience.

10+ years of information technology experience, with a desired 3+ years in a relevant performance management role or similar position providing comprehensive support of critical multi-tier applications.

Possess drive, desire, and ability to process and correlate data from multiple sources to derive root cause of complex performance and availability issues and provide solutions to resolve such issues

3+ years using Application Performance Management and other IT analysis tools such as Splunk, Riverbed AIX/ARX, Catchpoint, Dynatrace AppMon/DCRUM, New Relic, etc

5+ years with distributed server performance analysis & troubleshooting

Capable of capturing and analyzing network protocol traffic to assist in RCA

Deep understanding of the following technologies and concepts:

  • Web and web application servers (J2EE, .NET) including heap mgmt, GC tuning, etc
  • Operating systems and corresponding performance indicators; Windows Server and Linux
  • Database systems (Oracle/RAC, MS SQL) and database performance metrics
  • Virtualization, storage area networks, and underlying storage systems
  • Front-end web analysis/optimizations including caching, CDNs, compression, SPOFs

* Knowledge of Python and general scripting skills is heavily desired

Knowledge of emerging technologies and modern architectural concepts such cloud, containers, micro-services, single page applications, event-driven automation, etc.

Exceptional analytical, diagnostic, and problem solving skills

Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and determination
