What you’ll do

You will have the opportunity to help establish the data science function at Capterra and identify new areas to apply advanced analytics to drive business results. As a two-sided digital marketplace with an auction-based pricing model, the opportunities to put your data science skills to work are endless. You will cover a broad and evolving set of responsibilities as you build key data science capabilities at Capterra—versatility, adaptability, and self-sufficiency will be critical to success. You will help determine the direction of the data science roadmap and which tools and techniques are used to achieve Capterra’s analytics objectives. And as a member of the Gartner family, you will have access to industry-leading research on analytics and data science solutions to help you deliver a more engaging and relevant site experience for software buyers, and improve the volume and quality of buyer leads for software sellers on Capterra.

The specific responsibilities of this role include:

  • Support Capterra’s mission to be the leading resource for software buyers and sellers
  • Perform data exploration and foundational data analysis in support of long-term analytics objectives
  • Transform, standardize, and integrate data sets to develop data marts for data science use cases
  • Create classification systems for key buyer and seller attribute data to support predictive analytics
  • Build and test yield optimization models to improve the sponsored listings marketplace
  • Implement recommendation and content relevance engines to increase buyer engagement
  • Employ supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques to support analytic objectives
  • Develop data-processing and technical workflows for delivery of data-driven customer experiences
  • Model second-order buyer and seller response to changes in the Capterra software marketplace
  • Partner with engineering and product management teams to execute the data science roadmap
  • Serve as a central knowledge center for relevant data science tools and techniques


What you’ll need
  • Master’s degree or PhD strongly preferred
  • BA/BS from a top-tier university in economics, statistics, mathematics or similar quantitative field of study
  • 5+ years of professional work experience in data science or advanced analytics
  • Expertise in SQL scripting language
  • Proficiency working with relational databases (Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL)  
  • 2+ years of frequent scripting languages use (Python, R, and/or MatLab)
  • Experience with machine learning and statistical algorithms (ex: Regression, Clustering, Bayesian)
  • Experience working with web-analytics tools (ex: Google Analytics, Omniture)
  • Experience working with cloud-based data warehouses a plus (ex: Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery)
  • Experience with cloud-based personalization and machine-learning applications a plus
  • Experience working for consumer or business-facing digital brands a plus
