Director, Production of Knits, Sweaters, & Accessories - Banana Republic Factory Stores

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Director of Production manages a team responsible forproduct life cycle from product development through production. TheDirector Production reports to the VP of Global Sourcing. The Director ofProduction has managers as his/her direct reports. He/she also worksclosely with peers in Gap, Inc. (i.e. Merchandising, Creative Strategy, Design,Inventory Management, and International Gap offices, Quality/Compliance,Logistics and Technical Design) and external partners (i.e. vendors, mills,suppliers).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. In Season Management

A. Production Management

  • Oversee raw material development and sourcing
  • Coaching the staff to come up with creative solutions
  • Proactively troubleshooting to drive costing, quality and on time bulk deliveries
  • Build strong relationships internally and externally
  • Sharing top down information that helps the staff make informed decisions around manufacturing
  • Work closely with Gap international teams/offices to build sourcing strategies
  • Work closely with Gap international teams/offices on vendor allocation strategies

B. Financial Management

  • Set, align, communication and ensure departmental financial goals are met
  • Review business by department and make recommendations to drive results seasonally, annually and long term plans
  • Coach their staff to help meet departments' financial goals
  • Influence business partners to minimize liabilities in current seasons, creatively work/influence teams to avoid creating liabilities and/or to use liabilities
  • Set and manage departmental travel budget.
  • Build/engineer product that hits financial goals, set costing targets at the department and style level
  • Monitor macroeconomic indicators such as commodities markets and labor wages to negotiate seasonal costing
  • Review style level and department level opportunities for Speed to market such as: Platforming, testing, trigger calendars and read and respond

C. Calendar/Process management

  • Lead/manage unique calendar needs for the accessories area
  • Implement strategies according to plans, monitor progress, and make the necessary adjustments to achieve objectives
  • Be innovative in arriving at new and untried solutions to problems, edit goals/process to accessories specific needs
  • Be aware of the impact and implications of decisions on other aspects of business, carefully monitor apparel process and projects to determine how best to apply to accessories
  1. Product Placement

A. Strategic Planning

  • Make departmental recommendations on strategic plan
  • Recommend strategies to leverage cross division and department

B. Pre-production

  • Using the merchant line plan, review departmental product needs
  • Identify potential pre-production problems and recommend solutions
  • Review sample placement strategy / initial costing results and recommend alternatives
  • Coordinate early bulk fabric reservations across departments
  • Validate and inform hindsight analysis

C. Costing

  • Coordinate/partner within brand and across all Gap Inc. brands for factory/fabric/trim leveraging costs/volume opportunities
  • Review in-season capacity and MOQs with souring channels to plan for chase or fast tract styles and maintain supplier relationships
  • Review vendor base and establish the criteria for new suppliers and products
  1. People and Relationship Management
  • Build strong partnerships across functions
  • Development direct reports with tools such as: Behavioral (feedback, modeling), On the Job training, Coaching, Utilization of tools, quarterly/annual direct report reviews
  • Guide Production Managers in developing internal and external relationships
  • Recruit/Hire/Retain talent for the department
  • Influence across the origination
  1. Special Projects
  • Lead teams or committees in Corporate and Brand initiatives

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1) Knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Production: trade regulations, testing protocol, product integrity, production cycle timeline, fabric and garment construction
  • How product pipeline works

2) Minimum educational level:

  • 4 Year Bachelor Degree required

3) Minimum experience:

  • 4 Years Production experience
  • 8 Years Retail or Wholesale experience
  • 4 Years People Management experience

4) Physical Requirements:

  • International travel required.
