We are seeking a talented attorney to join our U.S. Employment Law team as Corporate Counsel. This role is responsible for providing strategic legal advice and technical expertise to Human Resources, management, and other cross-functional stakeholders on a broad range of complex employment matters and employment law trends across North America, including wage and hour issues, contingent workforce matters, employment benefits and compensation programs, leaves of absence and accommodations, as well as other substantive employment law areas. The role is also responsible for the management and defense of employment litigation and claims. Experience advising clients regarding the interplay between FCRA and state fair chance laws preferred. COMPETENCIES Collaboration & Influencing Accountability Learning Agility Resourcefulness ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP The position will report to the Associate General Counsel for U.S. Employment Law. This is a full-time position located in either the San Francisco or New York offices. In addition to having primary responsibility for one of Gap, Inc.'s signature brands, the Corporate Counsel will provide advice and counsel on a number of enterprise-wide employee related company goals. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Proactively identifying and assessing potential legal and/or reputational risk in support of business partners in the United States, and recommending practical, creative solutions that balance legal risk with business impact. Providing subject matter advice and guidance on a variety of employment law matters, such as the development and implementation of employee policies, organizational restructures, leaves of absence and accommodations, pre-employment practices including FCRA compliance and background screening, and other HR practices. Monitoring legislation, regulations, case law and government enforcement activities relating to the above substantive legal areas, and providing proactive, strategic advice within the employment law group and to relevant stakeholders. Managing litigation and claims, including administrative charges brought by the EEOC and related state and local agencies, as well as pre-litigation demands. This includes overseeing the work of outside counsel, and working closely with in-house paralegals to support and facilitate all aspects of the litigation process through resolution. Modeling and working with business partners across the company to ensure compliance with Gap Inc.'s Code of Business Conduct. Supporting and collaborating with cross-functional business partners on complex legal matters and special projects to drive and sustain employment law compliance and further the long-term interests of the Company. Managing litigation and claims, including administrative charges brought by the EEOC and related state and local agencies, as well as pre-litigation demands. This includes overseeing the work of outside counsel, and working closely with in-house paralegals to support and facilitate all aspects of the litigation process through resolution. Modeling and working with business partners across the company to ensure compliance with Gap Inc.'s Code of Business Conduct.

KEY EXPERIENCES

  • Juris Doctor or LLM from an accredited law school
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state or other applicable jurisdiction
  • A minimum of 5 years of employment law and related litigation experience, preferably in a law firm or in-house corporate legal environment
  • Significant expertise in employment law
  • Experience handling employment litigation and administrative charges
  • Experience advising clients on a wide range of significant employment law issues
  • Strong, persuasive written and verbal communication skills, including an ability to effectively and concisely communicate to and influence senior-level executives and business leaders
  • Proven ability to take ownership of projects and solutions, and drive to successful and timely completion
  • Must possess the following personal qualities:
