FLORIDA TODAY, a part of the USA TODAY NETWORK is looking for an experienced and passionate editor, an accountability journalist who will oversee a team of reporters assigned to some of our highest profile beats. We need someone who approaches news with a competitive instinct, wants to break news and own the big story.
This editor should help our staff prioritize watchdog and high-level enterprise, and encourage reporters to say no to the mundane and the boring. We want to keep experimenting with innovative ways to tell stories so this editor needs to be fearless about trying new things. That fearlessness comes from good news judgment, a passion for journalism, strong editing skills and an openness to new ideas. We need a coach and a collaborator who helps make us better every day.
Using knowledge and expertise, the editor in this position will assist in guiding content through its reporting and research phases, brainstorming with reporters and other editors about multimedia storytelling and audience engagement and editing the various components. Strong communication skills are critical, as is a can-do approach.
Some daily and Sunday story budget planning and communication with our design studio may become part of this job.
This editor must reinforce to reporters that their work continually balances fast-paced digital demands and enterprise and watchdog pieces. Improving reporting, writing and video work is a priority. The coach should build engagement opportunities and be prepared to represent the team and FLORIDA TODAY in public presentations.
