The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/USA TODAY NETWORK-WISCONSINis seeking an experienced, driven journalist to lead an award-winning team of reporters focused on local stories of high-interest and impact in Milwaukee's suburbs. This is a key position in a statewide operation that is a national leader in powerful journalism that tackles problems, holds people accountable and points to solutions.

This editor will oversee the operation of the Now News Group, which is an engine for reader growth and news coverage in Milwaukee's suburbs. The Communities team covers dozens of Milwaukee suburbs in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, Washington, Jefferson and Dodge counties with the aim of providing a range of meaningful coverage, including quick-response breaking news, business, politics, local government, features and more. Stories run in three weekly print sections in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, but the primary focus is delivering sharp, thoughtful, relevant daily coverage online. The team should be a must-follow source for what is happening in local communities, and what it means.

The successful candidate will have superior organizational skills, be able to coordinate coverage across multiple communities, juggle administrative tasks, coach reporters as they develop into experienced journalists, and shepherd pages through print each week. This forward-thinking leader will collaborate with other editors and reporters to tackle deeper enterprise stories beyond the scope of the usual day-to-day coverage.

In this role, you will be a champion for compelling writing, dogged reporting and high-impact work; you will spearhead audience-growth efforts in this area by helping our journalists identify stories that resonate and to tell them across platforms. The ideal candidate will bring an accountability mindset and a collaborative spirit to the role; be willing to explore new ways to do things, and never fall back to "this is how we've always done it"; have a track record of guiding innovative daily and enterprise work; be well-versed in using metrics to inform beats and coverage decisions; and love to coach reporters, setting high standards and elevating the quality of their work.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage a team of reporters, including overseeing story selection, reporting plans, digital presentation and publication.
  • Edit a range of stories, from breaking news to enterprise and alternative-format storytelling.
  • Drive innovative storytelling in all formats, from written word to video, audio and graphics.
  • Identify and address coaching needs of individuals and teams.
  • Uphold the highest ethical standards of journalism, including accuracy, fairness, and impartiality.
  • Help to foster a newsroom culture that values growth, learning and a diversity of viewpoints.
Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism or related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years of professional experience and/or management experience.
  • Strong news judgment and editing skills.
  • Comfort in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations.
  • Passion for empathetic, compassionate storytelling.
  • Commitment to detail, accuracy and fairness.
  • Ability to build a coverage strategy using analytics and innovation.
  • Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly, when news requires it.
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don't limit your upload to a resume; show us what you've done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
  1. Your resume - one to two pages.
  2. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
