Do you like to be the “first to know and first to go” when something new happens in your city? Do you take pride in being able to tell readers about things they didn’t know they wanted to do? Can you find compelling stories behind oddball sports and art exhibits and rock concerts and small town festivals? Can you make reading about things to do almost as much fun as doing them?
The Lansing State Journal, part of the USA Today Network, is looking for a things-to-do reporter to write about all of the interesting ways that our readers spend their free time. Or should.
In this role, you’ll tell great narrative stories, do quick-turn pieces on trending topics and interesting events, shoot and edit your own videos and create content for social platforms. Your goal is to increase awareness and appreciation of what the region has to offer and to find some interesting people and great yarns along the way.
The Lansing region is home to Michigan State University, whose 50,000 students and 3,000 faculty members add flavor to the cultural life and the nightlife. The university is home to a cutting edge contemporary art museum that brings in artists from around the world, to beloved sports teams that bring in fans from around the country and to a performing arts center that brings in Broadway shows, experimental theatre and big name musicians besides.
We have an active music scene, a spate of summer festivals, interesting cocktail bars nosing their way in among the many (often great) dive bars. We have miles of biking trails, increasingly ambitious restaurants, a miniature boom in brewing and distilling and lots of folks who are invested in moving the community forward.
What we need is someone who can tell stories with aplomb.
Ideal candidates should have at least two years of journalism experience, though exceptional recent graduates will be considered.
Typical Job Duties:
Produce multi-platform stories that have high-impact readership, using a well-developed personal brand and distinctive voice. These range from breaking news to multi-source enterprise stories, leveraging the best use of word, photos, videos and interactives to tell the story.
Collaborate and connect with the community through outreach (social media, public appearances, community leadership, etc.)
Work with the newsroom coaches and analysts to evaluate what’s working and what’s not, and develop ongoing plans to better reach our multiple audiences.
Produce strong journalism with minimal supervision.
Perform other duties as assigned.
