Job Purpose:

Under the direction of press management & supervisors—the Press Operator II is assigned to perform printing related tasks that may include, but are not limited to: Plate processing, spotting plates; reel set-up & operation; newsprint staging; roll preparation; black ink setting; limited press operational controls; equipment maintenance; and specified reporting. The primary objective is to support efficient press operations as needed to achieve & maintain on-time production, product quality standards, low waste, and operational safety.

Key Job Functions:

Under the direction of lead operators or supervisors—works as part of a press crew to coordinate press / plate operations during an assigned shift.


  • Report to scheduled shifts on-time and ready to begin work.
  • Work as a team to achieve & maintain on-time press performance.
  • Work as a team to achieve & maintain product quality standards.
  • Work as a team to meet waste goals.
  • Assist with plate, reel room & press operations as assigned.

Pressroom Tasks

Reel operations: Request, deliver & stage newsprint rolls, set-up reels, prepare approved paste patterns for all roll sizes, use

web kites / devices as applicable, monitor automatic pasters and/or make hand pasters, facilitate butt roll consumption, stage

waste, report & document roll damage, assist with reel room reports as required.

  • Unit make ready: Check & prepare units for operation, spot plates, ink make-ready, and web-up.
  • Densitometer calibration & operation.
  • Basic press control proficiency to reduce waste and achieve optimum quality standards include: Inch press, black ink &

water balance, black ink density, and assisting with lost web recovery & press restarts.

  • General press maintenance includes—but is not limited to: Cleaning blankets, wiping down press units, Installing, checking &

adjusting rollers, cleaning & replacing blankets, folder clean out, and other press specific maintenance as required.

  • Assist with press reports.


  • Always work in a safe manner, and consistently utilize required safety equipment
  • Complete required annual OSHA safety training programs: Lockout/Tagout, HazComm, Personal Protective Equipment,

Hearing Conservation, Blood borne Pathogen, Forklift.

  • Ensure all machine safety-guards are installed, functioning properly, and in use.
  • Constant housekeeping to maintain neat and organized work spaces.
  • Promote top-of-mind safety awareness.
  • Immediately report all operational concerns and/or potential safety hazards to press management.
  • Immediately report all injuries to press management.


  • Provide timely & accurate report information to the shift supervisor.
  • Immediately report equipment issues.
  • Communicate scheduling needs to press management and supervisors.


  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Related Experience.

  • Good verbal & written communication skills.
  • Good math skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Prior printing experience.

Technical Skills

  • PC Skills, Email.
