The Statesman Journal, part of the USA Today Network, seeks an experienced reporter to lead its state government and politics beat in Oregon’s Capitol city, Salem. This reporter will have demonstrated expertise in beat management and government accountability/watchdog work, embrace working in a collaborative newsroom environment, and a willingness to stretch and experiment in digital storytelling to engage audiences.
Salem is in the Mid-Willamette Valley, home to Willamette University, acclaimed wineries, and breweries, with easy access to Portland and the Oregon Coast.
In this role you will research, write and report compelling journalism that continuously grows a fan base by informing and engaging readers. You’ll be a public ambassador through community outreach and connect with readers through social media providing thoughtful analysis of complex issues while acting as a watchdog journalist that leads to change. You’ll work with the content coach, content strategists and audience analysts to shape storytelling to meet audience needs and interests on every platform. This is an opportunity to contribute to the community’s greater good through impactful journalism.
What you bring to the table:
- Experience in covering the Legislature, elections and state government.
- Exceptional cross-platform storytelling skills
- Exceptional core journalism skills (reporting, producing, editing).
- Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers’ time and money.
- Advanced knowledge of social media and how to engage fan base on digital platforms in the public space.
- Photo and video skills.
