The Evening Sun is looking for a Photographer who demonstrates high command of both video/photo techniques through sophisticated craftsmanship and performs duties under minimal supervision. Creates and develops visual storytelling across multiple platforms, using both videography and photography to inform, engage and entertain fan bases. Acts as a public ambassador through community outreach and connects with readers through social media. Works with news director, reporters and other photographers to improve content quality and to shape storytelling that will meet audience interests and needs. Mentors and teaches reporters to elevate their visual storytelling, especially through video.

Specific responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Produce high-quality video daily, choosing the best available tool for each scenario — a smartphone, still camera, video camera, etc.
  • Seek, at the very least, a raw footage video clip from breaking news events. Use quick-publishing platforms to publish and share with immediacy.
  • Understand the need for different types of video for different scenarios (longer, edited videos versus a 15-second clip vs. raw footage) and the best tools for each, including Brightcove, YouTube, VideoShop, Presto, iMovie, etc. Help guide reporters on these tools.
  • Generate ideas for all types of visual storytelling – news or feature videos, photo stories, photo galleries, audio clips, interactives and more. You will produce content based on those ideas.
  • Produce high-quality photographs that effectively and accurately tell the story; that are fair, tasteful and meaningful; that are well-framed, in-focus and effectively cropped; that offer a variety of perspectives, shapes and subjects and meet assigned deadlines.
  • Produce truthful images, and avoid situations that could lead to untruthful ones. You will understand and follow our ethical guidelines at all times, and educate the public on these ethics when necessary.
  • Arrive at assignments on time and interact with sources/public/other media in a professional manner.
  • Shoot and transmit photos with digital immediacy as a primary focus. You will understand options, weigh scenarios and use available technology to immediately deliver breaking-news images for digital from the field.
  • Edit photos with input from each photographer and the assistance of the news director, but also be expected to edit photos alone at times. You should be comfortable in both situations.
  • Write cutlines that include relevant, accurate details, and answer all who-what-when-where-why-how questions. First/last names of all subjects will be included. All words — especially names — will be spelled correctly.
  • Take every precaution to care for equipment — during use, transport and storage. You will alert a supervisor when equipment breaks down or is damaged. You will take great care to avoid subjecting equipment to theft opportunities. This includes your kit equipment as well as pool equipment. Return pool equipment when finished.
  • Copy photos and video files to all appropriate places, including local photo and video archives. Share photos with AP when appropriate.

Typical job duties:

  • Work on special projects and perform editing of visuals when needed.
  • Promote personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
