Newsroom Producer - Lansing State Journal

The Lansing State Journal, part of the USA Today Network, a Gannett Company, is seeking a Newsroom Producer who will shape our coverage online and in print. Working with editors, coaches, reporters and photographers, our production team uses a high level of news judgment and creativity to best present content on all platforms. A Producer works with engagement editors to reach our audience on social media channels. The Producer must be able to work quickly, independently and meet deadlines.

Specifically, a Producer manages the mobile fronts, home pages and story pages. They direct content, send breaking news emails and push notifications, add hyperlinks, images, info boxes, and additional digital content. Producers copy edit content before publishing and write digital headlines and summaries, taking into account SEO and keyword elements.

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field or equivalent in experience and education. Candidates must have a deep understanding and curiosity about competition for our customers time and money, have advanced knowledge of social media and how to engage audiences on digital platforms and have strong skills in digital production and decision making. It is important to have exceptional planning and organizational skills, the ability to interpret audience data and edit top-notch watchdog journalism. Also, candidates must be self-motivated and self-directed with exceptional core journalism skills.

This candidate must have the ability to work with diverse personalities, embrace peer-to-peer feedback and training and be innovative and creative while working in a fast-paced deadline driven environment. Outstanding writing, spelling, grammar and knowledge of AP Style is a must, along with a command of media law and principles of ethical conduct. In addition, candidates must have an understanding of or an ability to learn SEO strategies, storytelling techniques on multiple platforms and the use of metrics.
