Mailroom - Machine Operator

The Arizona Daily Star in Tucson, AZ, currently seeks full-time Machine Operators. Under general supervision is responsible for the smooth and efficient mechanical operation of the GMA SLS inserting machine, on line bundlers and Quipp stackers. Is able to set up and run Post It applicators and diagnose problems. Trained and proficient at performing light scheduled preventive maintenance on the SLS 3000 inserters Post It applicators, tie lines, tiers, stackers and boom loaders. Set up and runs the Stitcher Trimmers and quarter folder when necessary. Responsible for the mechanical operation of the inserters, sets up, readies and verifies inserts for assigned production runs. Assigns and arranges inserts for maximum production efficiency and optimum machine operations. Reviews machine while in operation and makes necessary adjustments. Quickly diagnose minor breakdowns and affect repairs to minimize downtime. Trains and assist under the direction of the PC maintenance staff with preventive maintenance and upkeep of the Packaging Center equipment. Operates the stitch and trimmer and quarter folder when needed. Is familiar with SAM and able to assign production runs.

Position requires intensive understanding of Packaging Center equipment, general mechanical ability and operation of various tools combined with a strong mechanical background. Must understand the production inserting process and be able to set up and run equipment. Must have a strong commitment to excellence, safety and customer service. Is expected to produce quality work. Position requires good organizational and communication skills along with fundamental mathematics and computer skills. Must have certification to operate a forklift along with experience in operations of electric pallet jacks. Must be familiar with Packaging Center procedures and workflow.
