Living and working in paradise? That’s what you get at The News-Press in Fort Myers, Florida. Surrounded by miles of sandy beaches along the Gulf of Mexico, the Fort Myers area is home to Florida Gulf Coast University(otherwise known as Dunk City during a run to the Sweet Sixteen), great shopping and even better food(ask Alton Brown, who found his favorite spot to eat in Florida right here).

As a part of a two-person team, this food reporter will be The News-Press’ galvanizing force in this area. The successful candidate will break news in a highly-competitive market and provide daily online updates and regularly contribute video. The expectation is that the reporter will be an authority on the local food, beverage and dining scene and will be actively engaged with the target audience in public events and on social media.

This reporter needs to become a recognizable personality for The News-Press – someone who is at the top of the local food chain, first to know and first to go when restaurants open, close, as well as other significant developments occur.

This reporter will focus on the business of food, ie: openings, closings, and trends that effect a key Southwest Florida industry. There should be a steady flow of production for the Web and print work can be played anywhere from page one to our Taste section, Business and Local front.

  • Comfortable in front of the camera and have the ability to produce videos. Works with the coach and news assistant to produce the weekly Taste section in print and updated digital content on various platforms.
  • Competitively report on breaking news, trends, and the key personalities related to dining and the local food culture.
  • Creative and versatile storytelling skills (narratives, authoritative lists, videos photo essays) should be used to generate enterprising ideas and produce content across all platforms.
  • Candidate must demonstrate initiative to also dig up newsy stories that go beyond basic reporting, from smart daily turns to eye-opening watchdog efforts.
  • Candidates should be able to work independently, develop sources and consistently produce story ideas from this important beat.
