Executive Editor and Vice President of News

Executive Editor and Vice President of News and Engagement/Wisconsin Network/Part of the USA TODAY NETWORK

The USA TODAY Network has an opportunity for a strong and innovative editor to lead 10 newsrooms that are part of its Wisconsin Network, the state’s strongest and most influential source of news.

This editor will be responsible for The Post-Crescent, Appleton; The Reporter, Fond du Lac; Green Bay Press-Gazette; Herald Times Reporter, Manitowoc; Marshfield News Herald; Oshkosh Northwestern; The Sheboygan Press; Stevens Point Journal; Wausau Daily Herald and The Daily Tribune, Wisconsin Rapids. In addition, this editor will work closely with the team at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on statewide coverage and Packers news.

The newsrooms that encompass the Wisconsin Network are each deeply embedded in their communities, delivering important news and driving conversation on critical issues. As a whole, the Network produces significant investigative work, from looking at public spending to tribal gambling to assisted-living care to chronic drunken drivers. In 2016, a team of 25 journalists from across Wisconsin spent months reporting the groundbreaking series “Kids in Crisis,” which focused on youth mental health in a state that ranks among the worst for rates of youth depression, youth suicide, and shortages of care providers.

The executive editor serves as a strategic partner with the regional president, the Wisconsin Leadership Executive team and as a trusted leader in the community. In this role, the editor also will work closely with the executive regional editor for the West, coordinating coverage, elevating local journalism and participating in projects across the USA TODAY NETWORK. The successful candidate has impeccable journalism credentials, outstanding leadership skills, and a keen grasp of the ever-changing digital space, including a strong knowledge of video storytelling. This position is devoted to leading outstanding public service journalism, guiding the continuing transformation in delivery of news and information and audience engagement, developing new approaches to grow our reach among targeted segments across all platforms and achieving newsroom performance metrics. The individual is people focused, has high standards, remains focused on the most important priorities and opportunities, and easily shifts between strategy and execution.

More than 689,000 consumers recognize, trust and engage with the 10 news organizations every day. The Network is the single largest news-gathering team in Wisconsin, representing dozens of locally-produced community-based brands, covering large communities like Green Bay and Appleton, to tight-knit communities like Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids. Overall, it spans 21 counties, offering a unique combination of strong local presence and geographic coverage.
