Digital News Director

The Courier-Journal, a Gannett company, is seeking an experienced and dynamic leader. The Digital News Director will be responsible for a team of journalists, aiming to provide a steady stream of high quality content while aggressively using data and analysis to drive decisions in covering the topics and issues most important to our key audience. This leader will coach reporters to make strategic decisions about coverage plans and will direct and champion investigative and First Amendment journalism.

The Digital News Director Oversees the programming, production, packaging and promotion of newsroom content in digital platforms, with an emphasis on mobile platforms. The digital news director’s team works with the content creation team to develop strategies for maximizing the impact and delivery of content at optimal times and with platform needs in mind. The director is also a key driver for innovation in digital content and products. The director’s team includes the following roles: digital producers, engagement editors, community content editors and developers. The director is responsible for how customers consume and respond to our content, including the use of audience feedback to better engage readers, and should be a key player in helping our news teams plan and execute high-impact content on digital platforms. The director makes daily content decisions based on insights from audience metrics, which are supplemented with data and research from the marketing department, and is the key person charged with helping our journalists understand how audiences consume content in digital platforms. This is a senior-level newsroom management position. The director must be able to work effectively across all divisions (sales, marketing, news) and help set key strategies and direction for the organization.The News Director works across departments in content initiatives, ranging from new products to native advertising and content sponsorships. This position will effectively partner with the production team and design studio on a daily basis and will work closely with the Community Content Specialist to set the editorial tone and plan content across sections and platforms.

Required Knowledge:

  • Advanced knowledge of emerging audience analytic tools as well as existing tools such as ComScore, Omniture, Chartbeat, Spredfast, SimpleReach, Google Analytics and the ability to interpret and apply such data.
  • Advanced knowledge of social media and customer feedback tools, including how to respond to and engage customers on digital platforms.
  • Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers’ time and money.
  • Advanced understanding of various news and information content management systems.
  • Expertise in digital programming for mobile, tablet, social, desktop and emerging platforms.
  • Ability to utilize basic and advanced computer programs, including MS Office Suite and Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, DreamWeaver and InDesign.

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, journalism or related field.
  • More than five years of digital news direction/development experience.
  • Proven proficiency in digital information programming by platform.
  • Strong communication and collaboration experience.
  • Exposure to a deadline driven environment
