Designer - Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an experienced designer to plan and design pages for print production while contributing their talents to our digital platforms. Our

designers are talented and collaborative journalists who help make our content distinctive, accessible and memorable.


Creates and/or produces illustrations, cut-out images and moderately complex graphs, maps, charts, information graphics, etc.

Plans and designs pages within sections/features of the newspaper and for section fronts.

Draws together multiple elements including stories, photos, graphics, illustrations, logos, information boxes, etc. into a cohesive, compelling presentation of the article.

Uses content tone to determine the size, style and arrangement and designs pages based upon space and aesthetic design concepts. Suggests and/or selects visual elements and may create secondary graphic elements to accompany content.

Reviews copy to ensure that visual elements support the content and to ensure accuracy of grammar, spelling, syntax, etc.

Able to react to change quickly and productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.

Given the nature of the daily newspaper, our page editors work nights and many weekends.


Qualified candidates should be able to produce attention-grabbing headlines and ensure balance and accuracy in content. Designers will also be responsible for special design projects, as assigned, and for producing art, motion and still graphics that adhere to Gannett’s legal, ethical and quality standards. Applicants should have the news judgment and teamwork skills to create a compelling, relevant daily newspaper under tight deadlines.
