The Gannett Design Studio, Asbury Park – a member of the USA Today Network – is hiring a copy editor to join a team of dedicated, collaborative and passionate journalists.
Design Studio designers and editors create visual concepts to communicate ideas that inform and captivate readers for 15 newspapers across five states from Vermont to Maryland.
Design Studio editors are able to produce attention-grabbing headlines and ensure balance and accuracy in content. Candidates should have a cool head on deadline and collaborate well with designers, producers and editors. Design Studio editors also use strong news judgment to help create compelling, relevant and accessible newspapers.
Candidates should have daily or weekly newspaper experience, which may include time spent at a student publication. Layout experience is a plus. Editors may be required to work nights and weekends.
In this role, you will:
Write compelling and conversational headlines and other associated display typography for print with an emphasis on dynamic storytelling.
Book newspaper pages and sections.
Select and edit wire content.
Design and layout newspaper pages using NewsGate Layout Champ.
Create breakout information from stories.
Trim stories to fit specs.
Proof and give final approval to pages.
Work collaboratively with remote editors and producers.
Adhere to legal, ethical and quality standards.
Here’s what you need:
Experience writing creative headlines and editing newspaper copy for accuracy and style.
General understanding of newspaper workflows and processes.
Ability to work quickly in a competitive, deadline-oriented environment.
Understanding of journalistic legal and ethical standards.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively.
Attention to detail.
Ability to work on multiple tasks during a shift.
Personal transportation, a valid driver’s license and successful completion of a drug screening and background check.
What would be a plus?
Ability to lay out pages that are proportioned, balanced and aesthetically pleasing.
Experience budgeting and planning newspaper pages and sections.
Experience selecting and editing wire content.
Previous employment in a studio environment working for several publications
Five or more years of newspaper editing experience
Experience working in a corporate environment.
