Summer Program Director, Oakland Area Locations (2017)


Galileo is looking for outstanding leaders to direct current or new Camp Galileo and Galileo Summer Quest sites for the 2017 season. The Summer Program Director (internally referred to as "Camp Director") assumes overall leadership of a camp location, including staff selection and management and day-to-day operations.  Camp Directors provide leadership and instructional supervision for staff, interact daily with families and community members, and are truly the face of Galileo in the communities they serve.  Camp Directors also work closely with their teams, developing the creative, fun, and wacky traditions that make each camp unique.


Camp Director Responsibilities

Most Camp Directors have full time jobs during the school year and commit 10-15 hours each week to their Camp Director role pre-camp with 3-4 additional weekends of training.


Pre-Camp (January-June)

  • Attend overnight season kick-off weekend retreat in January
  • Weekly phone check-ins with your manager (Area Director) starting in January
  • Help build enrollment at your camp through various marketing activities. Activities and hours vary by site (typically no less than 10 hours/season), but may include attending events, sending emails, calling families, or other community marketing efforts.
  • Attend a Saturday Staff Selection & Hiring Training day in February (first-year Camp Directors only)
  • Participate in 1-3 Camp Director/Region get-togethers
  • With the people operations team, hire top-notch staff and drive staff retention from the previous summer (you will receive training on all recruiting responsibilities):
    • Reach out to previous year’s staff by phone or in-person
    • Participate in a 2 hour online training on Galileo’s applicant tracking system in early February 
    • Beginning in February, participate in staff phone & group interviews (1 weekday evening group interview every other week, totaling 8-10 per season)
    • Make summer employment offers to each candidate you hire
  • Attend overnight Staff Management & Operations training retreat in early April

During Camp (Mid-June-Mid-August)

Camps run for 5-8 weeks, starting as early as early June and ending as late as mid-August, depending on location

  • Work full-time preparing for camp the week before camp begins, often at your camp site
  • Work full time for 5-8 weeks, depending on the duration of your camp; likely weekly hours during camp: 55-65
  • Run daily operations of camp, creating a high energy, fun and creative experience for campers (includes leading skits, cheers/songs, opening & closing ceremonies, all camp games, and other fun camp traditions)
  • Lead and manage staff, ensuring quality instruction, high energy, and overall performance
  • Communicate daily with parents
  • Manage costs, including supplies and staffing
  • Develop relationships with facilities partners and ensure facility is well maintained and left in excellent condition
  • Communicate daily with manager (Area Director)
  • Meet with other Camp Directors 2-3 times over the summer
  • Attend Camp Director debrief and celebration dinner in early August

Camp Director Selection Process

  • College graduate
  • Experience working with K-8th grade children
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Staff selection and management experience a plus
  • Summers available, with the ability to commit for a minimum of three years
  • Flexible, trustworthy, creative and positive; a leader who works well in teams, is performance-oriented, inspiring, energetic, organized, detail-oriented, communicative, fun-loving, and a good problem-solver

  • Opportunity:  As Galileo grows, we are always looking for Area Directors, curriculum creators, and other full-time staff. Successful Camp Directors are likely candidates for such opportunities. Galileo also has an alumni network which connects people with outstanding opportunities outside of Galileo.
  • Financial Reward:  A first year Camp Director typically earns $12,000-$14,000, with up to 20-30% annual increases in subsequent years. Galileo is unusual in that Camp Directors participate in—and benefit from—the financial success of their camps.
