Locations: 39 Broadway, with regular field work – City-wide travel required/ Monthly Metrocard Provided

SUMMARY:

As a critical member of Food Bank’s direct service SNAP outreach team, the Benefits Access Coordinator (NOEP) position is responsible for educating and connecting low-income, food insecure New Yorkers to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other public benefits that they may be eligible to receive. This position provides field-based outreach with key partners and locations to engage food insecure communities with information, eligibility screening and guidance on how to access benefits and resources.

This position requires city-wide travel to conduct in-field duties, and is estimated to be 60/40 in-field versus office-based.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Review families’ and individuals’ eligibility for USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP - formerly known as the Food Stamp Program), and other public benefits, and assist clients through the application processes;
  • Answer the Food Bank's multi-lingual benefits call center, respond to requests for information, and follow up with callers;
  • Participate in statewide Hunger Solutions New York outreach campaigns to educate NYS residents about the benefits of the SNAP, Summer Food, and School Breakfast Programs.
  • Educate agencies in your service area, including departments of local government and/or community organizations, about the benefits of collaboration with the NOEP
  • Travel to various agencies, sites and events citywide to conduct and participate in community outreach;
  • Schedule appointments and travel to partner organizations to submit SNAP applications and documents using the city agency's electronic database;
  • Conduct regular and ongoing client follow-up, and provide case review assistance and advocacy to clients who may experiences benefits problems and issues;
  • Track all pertinent client information in approved database, and complete reports as assigned;
  • Provide introductory orientation and supervision to call center volunteers.
  • Other duties assigned as necessary.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possess two (2) years direct social service client experience, and a Bachelor's degree preferred;
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish, English/Chinese) required;
  • Strong interest and familiarity with economic empowerment, public benefits, anti-poverty policy issues;
  • Experience and willingness to work with diverse and special populations, and the ability to collaborate with representatives from partner organizations;
  • Strong customer service, organization and communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and travel to different locations throughout the five boroughs;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs;
  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekend hours, as needed.
