Junior Political Writer

Position Description
Our Junior Political Writers will be assisting the marketing team at a very exciting time and play a role in the creation of a new political content hub. They’ll leverage data sources to generate bylines regarding legislative activity and the upcoming election cycle. The team will be creating new avenues of dissemination, including newsletters, social media, graphics, and more. Essential in building a new community at the intersection of data and politics, their articles will be pitched to major media outlets. They will bring innovative content ideas and have the opportunity to collaborate with organizations throughout DC.

About You
Slightly obsessed and wonky about politics and data, your intellectual curiosity is one of your greatest assets. Able to make even the most mundane topics interesting, you rely on your finely tuned writing ability to entice even the least interested into your web of words. Never splitting your infinitives or dangling your modifiers, your editorial prowess rarely fails to shine through – and you recognize what’s grammatically incorrect with this sentence. Above all, you believe in facts and accuracy, and you’re ready and willing to verify those facts and reach out to sources for comments. Ready to dive into anything, you derive immense excitement at the prospect of immersing yourself at the intersection of technology and policy.

You Will
- Use data from myriad sources (Census, OpenSecrets, social media, polling organizations, etc) to tell stories about the election and its impact
- Reach out to sources at campaigns and congressional offices
- Brainstorm and contribute a handful of bylines each week
- Learn and implement promotion and outreach for content distribution
- Learn best practices from the FiscalNote marketing, policy and data science teams

You Have
- An undergraduate degree (or are currently pursuing one) in political science, journalism, or something related
- Writing and research experience
- Knowledge of politics and/or government
- An understanding of social media best practices
